Policy for minimisation of plastic use-國立成功大學永續發展SDGs

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) had established and implemented a “Campus Plastic Reduction Policy” before 2024, clearly regulating that campus meetings and administrative procurement must avoid single-use plastic products such as bottled water, plastic lunch boxes, plastic bags, and straws. The policy also actively promotes the use of reusable cups, tableware, and shopping bags to reduce plastic consumption, and it falls within the 2021–2025 period of policy creation and review. In addition, NCKU enforces a Green Procurement system, requiring all units to prioritize the purchase of certified eco-labeled products, supported by a “Green Procurement Bonus Item List” that includes PLA cup lids, reusable containers, recycled paper, and energy-efficient equipment, ensuring plastic reduction is integrated into daily operations. Furthermore, Professor Hsin-Tien Lin from NCKU’s Department of Environmental Engineering has collaborated with Greenpeace to promote nationwide supermarket initiatives for packaging-free fruits and vegetables, using scientific research to support broader social actions on plastic reduction policies. 
 

On September 21, 2022, during its 214th Administrative Meeting, NCKU adopted the “Campus Plastic Reduction Policy,” aiming to reduce the use of single-use plastic products and promote a circular, low-carbon, and sustainable campus. The policy stipulates that campus meetings should avoid providing bottled water and plastic lunch boxes, refrain from offering paper cups and plastic utensils, and encourage the use of reusable cups and tableware. Administrative units are required to avoid single-use plastic bags and straws, reduce the procurement of excessively packaged products, and promote eco-labeled goods. The policy also advocates bringing personal reusable containers and raising environmental awareness among faculty and students, fully implementing source reduction and demonstrating the university’s institutionalized commitment to plastic reduction and sustainability. 



 

​​​​​​​Following the policies of the Environmental Protection Administration, NCKU actively promotes “Green Procurement,” requiring all units to prioritize environmentally friendly products in small-scale purchases. The university’s procurement system is linked to the EPA’s Green Procurement Online Reporting System, where product eco-label, energy-saving, or water-saving certification numbers must be entered to ensure compliance with environmental standards. The university also emphasizes that purchasing non-eco-friendly products will affect institutional performance evaluations, thereby encouraging all units to give priority to certified green products. This measure not only strengthens sustainable campus management but also complements the university’s plastic reduction policy and circular campus goals, demonstrating NCKU’s institutional commitment to environmental responsibility through procurement practices.
