Promote sustainable commuting

National Cheng Kung University advances sustainable commuting through multiple measures, all documented on publicly accessible webpages.

Each semester, the Military Training Office compiles a list of idle bicycles on campus and organizes free claim/adoption, promoting convenient mobility and circular reuse of resources. The University also stipulates rules via the Guidelines for Installing EV Charging Facilities at NCKU, and has installed car and scooter charging stations with a station map for easy access; two super charging stations are open to the general public (east side of Chung Cheng Gym, Kuang-Fu Campus; south side of the College of Social Sciences, Li-Hsing Campus). In parallel, the University is replacing official fleet vehicles with electric scooters, enabling campus security units to carry out daily patrols while reducing emissions and noise.

On the information side, NCKU Hospital’s “Cheng-e Parking” app provides real-time parking availability and shuttle information, serving as an interface for transfers and parking management and helping users plan their commuting routes.

  1. NCKU Provides Free Bikes for Making Everyone’s Commuting More Convenient

To promote sustainable commuting, NCKU has long organized the Campus Bicycle Adoption Program, in which abandoned or unused bicycles on campus are repaired and then provided free of charge to students and staff. This initiative not only helps members gain convenient green transportation options but also effectively reduces the use of motor vehicles on campus, creating a low-carbon and friendly commuting environment. It demonstrates the University’s institutionalized action to promote a “walking and cycling first” policy and ensures that campus transportation aligns with the goals of sustainability, safety, and health.

  1. Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment
NCKU has established multiple electric vehicle and scooter charging stations across its Tzu-Chiang, Kuang-Fu, Cheng-Kung, and Li-Hsing campuses, providing charging services for both electric cars and motorcycles. This initiative promotes the use of low-carbon transportation, aligns with national energy transition and net-zero policies, and encourages faculty and students to adopt electric vehicles for campus commuting and travel. It demonstrates the University’s concrete commitment to supporting sustainable commuting and green transportationthrough infrastructure development.

  1. NCKU Regulations for the Installation and Management of Electric Vehicle Charging Facilities
NCKU has formulated the “Guidelines for the Installation and Management of Electric Vehicle Charging Facilities”, which clearly regulate the installation, application, and usage management of EV charging facilities on campus and in outsourced parking lots. The document specifies application qualifications (such as introducing professional operators through tenders or adopting a self-built model) and review procedures (to be jointly examined by the General Service Division and the Campus Traffic Management Committee) to ensure compliance and sustainability. This demonstrates that NCKU has institutionalized the development of electric vehicle infrastructure through official regulations, actively promoting green transportation and supporting low-carbon commuting.

  1. NCKU Security Team Launches First Fleet of Green Energy Patrol Vehicles — Campus Supercharging Stations Open to the Public
The NCKU Campus Security Team has introduced its first fleet of green electric patrol scooters on campus to replace traditional fuel-powered motorcycles, thereby reducing carbon emissions from campus traffic management. This initiative not only enhances the efficiency and safety of campus patrols but also demonstrates the University’s concrete actions in promoting low-carbon transportation.

  1. “Cheng-e Parking” (Real-Time Parking App Providing Public Transit and Parking Management Information to Promote Proper Parking and Shuttle Diversion)

NCKU has developed and implemented the “NCKU e-Parking” real-time parking information app, which allows both campus members and the public to check available parking spaces. The system guides drivers to park reasonably, prevents traffic congestion caused by disorderly searches for parking, and facilitates public transport transfer and shuttle connections. Through smart parking management, the University effectively reduces vehicle idling and unnecessary circulation on campus and surrounding roads, thereby lowering carbon emissions.
