NCKU's student food insecurity and hunger

      Student-Friendly Dining Environment
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) fosters a student-friendly dining environment through accessibility, hygiene governance, and health promotion. The campus operates two dormitory cafeterias (Kuang-Fu Second Dorm, B1; Ching-Yeh First Dorm, B1), managed by the Housing Service Division and supervised by the Health Promotion Section, under the guiding principle of “reasonable prices and hygiene first.” A customer information portal provides business details, feedback channels, meeting minutes, food-safety education, and a section on Muslim (Halal) dining.

Campus Dining Accessibility Map
In addition, the Office of General Affairs publishes a campus “Food” distribution map that consolidates dining venues and related facilities across campuses to improve accessibility.

Dining Oversight and Quality Management
On dining governance, the University’s Dietary Committee serves as the oversight mechanism to strengthen hygiene and service quality management.

Healthy Dining and Health Promotion
The Health Promotion Section’s “Healthy Dining” portal also relays the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s restaurant sanitation grading system, encouraging faculty, staff, and students to prioritize restaurants bearing “Excellent” or “Good” labels—forming a one-stop resource from vendor-selection guidance to health education.

  1. Instruction of students' restaurant in the dorm:

NCKU currently has two student dormitory restaurants, located in the basement of Kuang-Fu Dormitory No. 2 and Ching-Yeh Dormitory No. 1. Daily operations are managed by the Housing Service Division, while the Health Division supervises hygiene, and the Office of General Affairs is responsible for facility maintenance and procurement. Through coordinated management across multiple divisions, the university ensures efficient operations and food safety, providing reliable dining services for dormitory students.

  1. “Food” Section:
NCKU provides a wide range of dining and lifestyle facilities across the Kuang-Fu, Cheng-Hsing, Sheng-Li, Cheng-Kung, and Li-Hsing campuses. These include the Cooperative Store, Yun-Ping Café, vending machines, Kuang-Fu and Ching-Yeh cafeterias, Youyang Café, Chun-Chih restaurant, and the Medical School cafeteria. Services offered range from buffets, light meals, and coffee to convenience store functions. This distribution map integrates on-campus food resources, making it convenient for students and staff to access dining and daily needs across different campuses.

  1. National Cheng Kung University Dietary Committee Organization Guidelines:
NCKU has established a “Dietary Committee,” composed of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Dean of General Affairs, the Director of Construction and Maintenance, the Director of Health and Counseling, the Director of Housing Services, faculty representatives, and student representatives. Its main duties include supervising the implementation of dining contracts, advising on contract signing and renewal, making recommendations based on dining evaluations, and handling dining-related affairs. The committee meets at least once per semester and may convene additional meetings as needed to ensure food safety and service quality on campus.

  1. Campus Announcement: Notification of the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Food Service Hygiene Grading Evaluation System:
NCKU implements the “Food Sanitation Management Grading System” and encourages faculty and students to support dining at establishments labeled with “Excellent” or “Good.” This initiative aims to enhance food hygiene and safety around the campus and promote choosing restaurants that have passed official evaluations. Detailed evaluation results, including the list of vendors certified in 2023, can be found on the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration website.

  1. Healthy Dining Section:
NCKU’s “Healthy Dining” section provides a variety of resources, including related website links, government regulations, food hygiene education, and relevant announcements. The platform is designed to enhance students’ and staff’s awareness of healthy eating and food hygiene, while connecting external resources and standards to help campus dining services comply with food safety and hygiene requirements. By openly providing regulations and educational materials, it strengthens the transparency and professionalism of campus dining management, ensuring students’ food safety and health.
