NCKU’s Climate Action Plan

To respond to global warming and net-zero carbon emissions, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) launched the following specific plans and action proposals in 2023, sharing them with local governments and community groups to lead the transformation of businesses and government.
  1. At the 2024 4th TSAA Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards, NCKU received 1 Grand Award, 1 Gold Award, and 1 Bronze Award.

The Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE) organized the 2024 4th Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions across sectors in advancing the 17 SDGs. Among them, the Gold Award-winning project, “Chiayi Net Zero AI Remote Carbon Management,” was developed by the team of Prof. Wu from the Department of Geomatics and Prof. Hsu from the Department of Architecture at NCKU. The team applied multiple cutting-edge geospatial technologies and AI algorithms to estimate urban carbon sequestration in Chiayi. In collaboration with the Chiayi Environmental Protection Bureau, the team has so far completed carbon sink estimations for six outdoor green spaces and the Chiayi Experimental Forest, with preliminary results showing an estimated carbon sequestration benefit of 35.73 metric tons per month. Looking ahead, the project will continue to expand its analytical scope while balancing cultural preservation and sustainable development, ultimately contributing to Chiayi City’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

  2. NCKU’s Net-Zero Carbon New Generation Training Base sees strong enrollment in the iPAS “Net-Zero Carbon Planning and Management Professional” certification course.

NCKU is actively responding to climate action by launching the 2024 iPAS Net-Zero Carbon Planning Manager Certification Program, which attracted over 100 participants—reflecting the strong demand from society and industry for net-zero professionals. The program covers core knowledge such as carbon inventory, carbon planning and management, carbon tax policies, and net-zero technologies. Participants come from diverse fields, including science, engineering, law, management, and humanities, highlighting the influence of cross-disciplinary climate education. Looking ahead, NCKU’s Carbon Neutral Talent Training Base will expand to international certifications, further strengthening talent cultivation and industry collaboration, deepening local climate education, and advancing the net-zero transition through education, research, and professional training.

  1. NCKU collaborates with the Taiwan Stock Exchange and Carbon Exchange to host a forum, bringing together scholars and experts to discuss and focus on the net-zero transition.

  1. 【Phoenix Lecture】Academician Yuan-Tseh Lee Visits NCKU to Discuss “New Development Models for Sustainable Human Survival”

NCKU is actively advancing climate action. In 2024, the university joined hands with the Taiwan Stock Exchange and the Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange to host the “Future of Net-Zero Transition” Forum, bringing together scholars, experts, over 200 industry leaders, and young students to explore net-zero carbon trends, ESG sustainability strategies, and emerging opportunities in the circular economy. The forum focused on key topics such as carbon inventory, emission reduction targets, carbon trading, and green finance, offering practical strategies for businesses while fostering cross-sector collaboration. Looking ahead, NCKU is planning a follow-up forum on “Net-Zero Key Technologies” and a series of professional courses covering international standards, greenhouse gas management, and low-carbon design. These initiatives aim to cultivate net-zero talent and highlight the university’s role in education, research, and industry engagement as a driving force in climate action.

  1. NCKU Maintenance and Operation of the Marine Meteorological Observation Tower

Marine meteorological observation tower maintenance and operation transfer the accumulated 6 years of maintenance and operation observation technology capabilities to domestic manufacturers, and at the same time provide Taiwan Power Company with educational and training opportunities in related operations, and transfer many years of offshore observation technology and maintenance experience to Taiwan Power Company.
