NCKU makes good use of living wastewater.
SDG6

Make good use of living wastewater. NCKU has a way to save money.
Set up eight rainwater treatment facilities to recycle rainwater and reuse it for environmental protection.
The entire campus of NCKU covers an area of 180 hectares, and the seven campuses of the university alone cover an area of 80 hectares. In addition to teaching, research, and administrative buildings and roads, the entire campus is covered with green trees and lawns. In the face of the dilemma of large lawns and trees requiring large amounts of water for irrigation, NCKU has chosen to set up rainwater treatment facilities in some buildings or public facilities to collect all rainwater and living wastewater and use it for watering plants and trees. In addition to saving water resources and water bills, this ingenious and creative idea of NCKU can also serve as an educational purpose.
The Office of General Affairs of NCKU indicated that there are eight rainwater treatment facilities in total on campus. They are located in the basement of Yun-Ping Building on Kuang-Fu Campus, the basement of Management Building, the basement of student activity center, the basement of Chinese Literature Department, the basement of Hsiu-Chi Building, the underpass on Sheng-Li road ( leading from Kuang-Fu Campus to Cheng-Kung Campus), the basement of under parking lot on Tzu-Chiang Campus, and the basement of Dorm No.2 on Ching-Yeh Campus. The amount of rainwater collected by these eight rainwater treatment facilities is enough to water plants and trees on the whole campus, therefore, there is no need to use tap water.
Among all the rainwater treatment facilities, the one on the underpass on Sheng-Li road ( leading from Kuang-Fu Campus to Cheng-Kung Campus) has the largest amount of water, the second one is the one in the basement of Yun-Ping Building on Kuang-Fu Campus. NCKU makes full use of the rainwater it collected. Take the one on Sheng-Li road for example, it has a daily output of about 500,000 tons of water. In addition to watering the plants and trees on Cheng-Kung campus, all the remaining water is diverted to Cheng-Kung Lake for storage and then pumped out of it to irrigate neighboring lawns or trees when needed.Since the wastewater collected by NCKU’s rainwater treatment facilities is only rainwater and living wastewater, and does not include septic tank effluent, the water quality is very suitable for irrigating plants and trees.
