NCKU's off-campus water conservation support

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) is actively engaged in water conservation, both on and off-campus, by providing technical expertise and knowledge support. This includes water quality testing and surveys, the development of comprehensive plans for sustainable water management, and the facilitation of collaboration between research centers and local communities:

Associate Professor Yeh Hsin-Fu from the Department of Resource Engineering leads a research team to the British Geological Survey (BGS) for a bilateral cooperation project on groundwater drought. The team focuses on three research areas and aims to publish their findings: (1) groundwater drought, (2) streamflow analysis, and (3) groundwater drought forecasting.

The NCKU Hydraulic Laboratory team conducts water quality sampling in domestic rivers and establishes automatic monitoring stations for real-time observation. This data evaluates the effectiveness of environmental protection measures, informs regulatory policy, and provides early warnings for potential water quality deterioration.

Commissioned by the Southern Region Water Resources Office of the Ministry of Economic Affairs,NCKU's Sustainable Environment Research Laboratories executed various monitoring, testing, and ecological assessment projects related to reservoirs in 2023.

The Department of Hydraulic & Ocean Engineering at NCKU has been  actively working in the Wu Gou community to enhance and maintain water channel water quality and the habitat environment for fish and shrimp. These efforts include restoring native species and establishing the Wu Gou Water Museum, which introduces local ecology and culture to promote sustainable development in the village community.
  1. Taiwan Metropolitan Area Stormwater Flood Resilience Planning Workshop

The Architecture and Building Research Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and National Cheng Kung University held a workshop on December 16, 2024, titled “Planning for Urban Flood Resilience in Taiwan’s Metropolitan Areas.” The workshop focused on watershed lands in metropolitan regions, establishing flood resilience assessment techniques by integrating land-use planning and hydrological calculations, and exploring their applications in national and urban planning. Industry, government, and academic representatives were invited to exchange ideas, aiming to incorporate their feedback into future urban planning and flood mitigation strategies.

  1. The Department of Environmental Engineering at NCKU Collaborates with Tainan City Government to Develop Sustainable Water Resources
The Department of Environmental Engineering at National Cheng Kung University, in collaboration with the Tainan City Government, ASUS Group, and Shoulder Intelligence, is promoting the "Yongkang Water Resource Recovery Center 5G Smart Management Demonstration Project." The project treats wastewater for high-tech water reuse, establishing an intelligent water quality monitoring and early-warning system. It enhances stable water supply and management efficiency, demonstrates NCKU’s industry-government-academia collaboration, supports the protection and sustainable use of external water resources, and advances smart water management in Tainan.

  1. National Cheng Kung University Organizes International Short-Term Courses

The Disaster Prevention Education Center at National Cheng Kung University, in collaboration with the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) and WG-SCER, organized a short course on disaster prevention and water resource management in coastal low-lying areas. Combining international expert insights with field visits, the course addressed risks such as land subsidence, flooding, and saltwater intrusion. It promoted cross-border knowledge exchange and sustainable solution sharing, enhancing disaster resilience in coastal communities and supporting the protection and sustainable use of water resources beyond the campus.

  1. NCKU Water Technology Research Center

The center conducts in-depth research on three key areas: hydropower and water energy related to natural water flow processes, water resource utilization and disaster prevention, and water environment conservation, providing integrated solutions. By leveraging interdisciplinary talent across departments, colleges, and universities, it offers professional consulting services, develops industry-academia and cooperative education projects, pursues patents and technology transfer, and promotes the research achievements of the center’s professors and researchers.
