NCKU’s educational programmes on ecosystems
Cheng-Kung Lake Dredging and Hands-On Ecological Education
In 2024, NCKU launched a dredging project for Cheng-Kung Lake, integrating environmental and ecological education. Activities allowed students and faculty to directly participate in the dredging, conduct ecological investigations, and identify species—enhancing awareness of water quality and biodiversity. Beyond improving the lake’s ecosystem, the project included pre-activity briefings and interdisciplinary collaboration, reflecting NCKU’s commitment to sustainability education and nurturing students’ environmental consciousness and action.
Local Ecology and Cultural Learning Experiences
Academically, NCKU actively incorporates local ecology and conservation concepts across its colleges. The College of Liberal Arts offers the “Exploring Tainan” course, which features themed field trips. Students experience the interplay of nature and culture while learning about Tainan’s landscapes, ecosystems, and heritage—through campus plant tours, Zengwen River fieldwork, and urban green space observations—fostering a strong sense of place and environmental responsibility.
Marine Wildlife Conservation and Practical Training
The Department of Life Sciences offers courses such as “Theory and Practice of Cetacean Rescue” and “Conservation of Marine Wildlife—Rescue, Theory, and Practice.” These classes cover endangered species conservation, ecological ethics, and hands-on rescue and rehabilitation training—equipping students with both expertise and social responsibility.
Through diverse, practice-oriented education, NCKU not only provides academic knowledge but also cultivates environmentally literate, action-ready, and globally minded citizens. This integration of learning and practice strengthens ecological conservation in higher education and affirms NCKU’s role as a leader in environmental and social responsibility.
- NCKU Cheng-Kung Lake Dredging Project Integrates Sustainable Development and Ecological Education
NCKU’s Cheng-Kung Lake dredging project integrates environmental and ecological education, organizing activities that allow faculty and students to participate in hands-on waterwork, ecological exploration, and species identification. These experiences enhance understanding of water quality and biodiversity while fostering students’ care for and proactive engagement with the natural environment.- “Exploring Tainan” Course – The Environmental and Ecological Zones of NCKU Campus
NCKU has designed a series of outdoor walking courses, guiding students into areas where nature and culture intersect. These routes allow students to gain an in-depth understanding of Tainan’s landscapes, ecological environment, and cultural history. Through field explorations along different themed routes, students develop a stronger sense of identity and responsibility toward their local environment.
- 2024 Modular Summer Course: Cetacean Rescue – Theory and Practice
The course content is designed to introduce the conservation status and basic knowledge of marine wildlife, including cetaceans, cartilaginous fish, and other marine mammals. It integrates NCKU’s Cetacean Research Center’s years of experience in rescue and rehabilitation, along with historical domestic and international cases of cetacean strandings, providing students with comprehensive analyses and hands-on field exercises.- Ecological Urban-Rural Practice Intercollegiate Workshop
The workshop employs a debate format to explore topics related to renewable energy, enriching participants’ knowledge and perspectives on climate change. It also enhances teamwork and coordination skills, enabling participants to collaboratively propose new insights and innovative ideas for the sustainable development of the Qigu area.
