NCKU’s policy on plastic waste reduction
Zero supply of plastic bags and disposable tableware:
All on-campus dining facilities comply with the plastic reduction policy and do not proactively provide plastic bags or disposable tableware. This approach reduces plastic usage at the source and encourages students to bring their own reusable utensils.
Discount on eco-friendly tablewares and cups:
Since the 100th academic year, the Guangfu and Jingye dormitory dining halls have offered incentives to students who bring their own tableware. This encourages residents to use stainless steel or ceramic utensils, further reducing the use of disposable tableware.
Provision of Eco-Friendly Tableware and Cleaning Stations:
All campus dining halls have switched to stainless steel tableware, and “Personal Tableware Cleaning Stations” have been set up outside dining areas. Tea tree powder is provided for cleaning, helping to reduce plastic waste and detergent pollution.
Promotion of no plastic use in daily lives:
The Office of Student Affairs, in collaboration with Professor Li Jun-Chang from the Environmental Trace Toxicology Research Center, utilizes the Educational Handbook on Phthalate Contamination in Food to raise student awareness of the potential health and environmental impacts of plastic products. Signs reading “For your health, please use stainless steel or ceramic containers and tableware” have been placed next to water dispensers in dormitories, integrating environmental protection with health education.
Through these diverse initiatives, NCKU not only reduces plastic waste on campus but also raises students’ awareness of environmental protection and personal health, achieving the sustainable campus goal of “education through everyday life.”
- To facilitate effective resource recycling, please consider strengthening the promotion of source reduction and waste sorting and recycling efforts
NCKU promotes plastic reduction and waste sorting policies, encouraging faculty and students to bring their own reusable tableware and properly separate recyclables and food waste. Laboratory waste, construction debris, and old furniture must be properly handled by contractors. The campus has clearly labeled bins and coordinates with garbage and recycling trucks for collection. Recyclables include paper, aluminum cans, PET bottles, glass bottles, and hazardous waste, demonstrating NCKU’s strong commitment to plastic reduction, resource recycling, and environmental protection.- NCKU Campus Plastic Reduction Guideline

NCKU promotes a plastic reduction policy, encouraging faculty, staff, and students to avoid single-use plastics, plastic bags, straws, and excessive packaging in campus meetings and office administration. The policy also advocates bringing reusable cups, tableware, and bags, and prioritizing products with environmental labels. Through daily practice and awareness campaigns, NCKU fosters a culture of plastic reduction, supporting a low-carbon, circular, and sustainable campus.
