Establishment of Research Centers
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has established multiple research centers dedicated to environmental sustainability, covering areas such as marine ecosystem conservation, disaster prevention technology, green energy materials, energy technology, and environmental resource management. 

Integration of Education and Research
These centers integrate teaching, research, technology development, and international collaboration, with dedicated research personnel actively engaging in undergraduate and graduate-level education and mentorship to enhance the impact of environmental sustainability education and research.  

Interdisciplinary Innovation and Policy Development
Through interdisciplinary collaboration and technological innovation, these research centers drive industrial applications and policy development, strengthening the sustainable utilization and governance of environmental resources. 

Global Cooperation and Sustainable Development
The centers actively participate in international exchanges, fostering global cooperation in environmental protection and technological advancement, contributing to the realization of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

  1. Center for National Land Development Research – Implementation of the Comprehensive Farmland Utilization Planning Project
NCKU’s Center for National Land Development Research, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, advances comprehensive farmland utilization planning and agricultural spatial development. By updating agricultural and farmland inventories, the team assesses production capacity, identifies spatial variations, and applies spatial analysis to guide policy and land-use regulation.
The project optimizes the layout of production, processing, storage, and distribution for regional staple and specialty crops, while addressing climate change through resilient agriculture and circular economy measures, such as drainage improvements and livestock waste recycling. By promoting cross-sector integration and sixth-sector industrialization, the initiative strengthens coordination between agriculture and rural development, showcasing NCKU’s expertise in sustainability, spatial planning, and green transformation.

 
  1. Environmental Resources Research and Management Center – Briefing on Campus Laboratory Waste Disposal
NCKU Waste Treatment Plant, Environment Resource Management Research Center held campus laboratory waste management briefing sessions across northern, central, and southern Taiwan. The sessions introduced proper waste classification, temporary storage, and legal transportation procedures, while strengthening awareness of source reduction and risk management. Through policy guidance and practical exchanges, the Center assisted universities in enhancing treatment efficiency and regulatory compliance, thereby reducing the environmental impacts of laboratory waste.

 
  1. Resilient Smart Energy Research Center – Course on Advanced Lithium Battery Technology, Hydrogen Decarbonization, and Circular Economy Development
To enhance industry professionals’ knowledge in advanced lithium battery research, international hydrogen energy technologies, key carbon neutrality technologies, and the circular economy, while promoting the development of green energy materials and attracting broader participation, this program draws on internationally recognized research to design a short-term foundational and practical course on advanced lithium batteries. The curriculum also incorporates AI and machine learning applications in energy materials development, carbon capture and utilization technologies, and circular economy practices.
The program further provides key technologies for energy material recycling and recovery, significantly reducing waste generation and striving toward the goal of net-zero carbon emissions.
  1. National Territory Research Center – Policies and Strategic Planning for Sustainable Development of Offshore Islands
The research teams at National Cheng Kung University promote environmental sustainability and social engagement. The university integrates geospatial information, civil and architectural engineering, and energy technology to develop AI-based remote sensing carbon sink estimation, urban green space carbon sequestration analysis, and net-zero energy system integration technologies to support climate governance and carbon neutrality policies.
At the same time, the university promotes sustainable agriculture and resource circularity through improvements in rural education and agricultural supply chains, balancing environmental protection with social equity. These achievements have been recognized by the Taiwan Sustainable Energy Research Foundation (TAISE) with one Special Excellence Award, one Gold Award, and one Bronze Award in the TSAA Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards.

 
  1. 2025 Green Roads Briefing
This system and its indicators are used to evaluate Green Road certification. It was developed under the research project titled “Establishment of a Green Road Evaluation System for Urban Roads,” proposed by the Construction and Planning Agency of the Ministry of the Interior, and established by NCKU.
During the research process, the development of international green road evaluation systems was reviewed, and the strengths of relevant assessment frameworks were analyzed. Through practical participation in domestic urban road case studies, a Green Road evaluation system suitable for urban roads in Taiwan was developed to assess the sustainability of roads from multiple dimensions.
