- Integrating Sustainability Education: NCKU Cultivates Future Leaders for Global Sustainable Development

NCKU actively promotes sustainable development education by offering a wide range of courses designed to cultivate students' sustainability literacy and help them deeply understand and practice the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The university's carefully designed courses cover topics such as environmental protection, social responsibility, and green economy, enabling students to acquire practical skills to address current global challenges while engaging with theoretical knowledge. These courses not only enhance students' awareness of environmental issues but also encourage them to think from multiple perspectives on how to actively promote sustainable development in their future careers and daily lives. NCKU's interdisciplinary collaboration brings together students from different disciplines to explore sustainability issues and inspire innovative solutions. Through these educational initiatives, the university evaluates students' sustainability literacy, raises their sustainability awareness, and nurtures future leaders with the ability to drive social and environmental change, laying the foundation for achieving global sustainability goals and fostering societal transformation.
- Empowering Students through Action: NCKU Innovates with a Personal Carbon Footprint Calculator for Sustainable Living

NCKU continues to integrate sustainability into student learning by encouraging hands-on innovation. Faculty members guided an interdisciplinary student team to develop a Personal Carbon Footprint Calculator, designed to help students measure and reflect on their carbon emissions from everyday activities such as food, clothing, housing, transportation, and recreation. The tool enables users to quantify their lifestyle-related emissions and explore practical carbon reduction strategies. The project emphasizes learning through action—students not only acquired knowledge of carbon auditing and environmental data analysis but also cultivated interdisciplinary collaboration and systems thinking. By designing and testing the calculator, students learned to identify real-world sustainability challenges and propose innovative, low-carbon lifestyle solutions. Combining sustainability education with digital technology, this initiative strengthens students’ problem-solving abilities and sense of environmental responsibility. Through this program, NCKU demonstrates its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 13: Climate Action), empowering students to internalize and apply key sustainability concepts in both their studies and daily lives.
- Cultivating Sustainability Talent: NCKU Launches Professional Certification System to Empower Future Green Leaders

To strengthen students’ understanding and application of sustainability principles, NCKU has established a Sustainability Professional Certification Mechanism aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This system aims to cultivate interdisciplinary sustainability competencies and integrate them into students’ learning journeys. The certification includes five categories—SDGX Specialist, Social Sustainability Talent, Economic Sustainability Talent, Environmental Sustainability Talent, and Comprehensive Sustainability Talent—each divided into basic, intermediate, and advanced levels to encourage progressive learning and mastery. The mechanism is integrated into NCKU’s Future Success+ platform, which records students’ coursework, research projects, and service-learning experiences related to sustainability. Through this structured system, students can demonstrate their sustainable expertise and align their learning outcomes with future green and sustainable job markets. This initiative supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), reinforcing NCKU’s mission to nurture globally minded professionals equipped with sustainability literacy and social responsibility.
- Advancing Net-Zero Education: NCKU Trains Green Collar Professionals to Lead Taiwan’s Sustainable Transformation

In 2024, NCKU strengthened its commitment to sustainability education by enhancing students’ understanding and application of key concepts related to net-zero transformation. As the Southern Regional Training Center of Taiwan’s Net-Zero Green Collar Talent Development Alliance, NCKU partnered with eight southern universities to promote the Net-Zero Green Talent Training Program. The curriculum covered topics such as climate change, greenhouse gas management, carbon inventory, and carbon footprint, taught by experts from government, industry, and academia. Participants—including NCKU students and professionals—learned to integrate sustainability thinking into practical solutions and policy implementation. The program emphasized both theory and hands-on experience through case studies and exercises on carbon pricing mechanisms, emission tracking, and reduction strategies. Graduates who passed the assessment received official certification from the Ministry of Environment, recognizing them as certified “green collar” professionals. This initiative not only aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4, SDG 13, SDG 17) but also equips students with the skills to transform sustainability concepts into meaningful action—demonstrating NCKU’s leadership in cultivating future-ready talent for the green economy.
