On June 7, 2025, National Cheng Kung University’s (NCKU) self-developed CubeSat, "IRIS-A," completed its mission after orbiting Earth over 300,000 times across three years. Launched in January 2022 aboard a SpaceX rocket, the satellite successfully validated space IoT technologies, low-Earth orbit navigation receivers, and satellite imaging. Despite solar magnetic storms, it operated smoothly for 1,234 days before reentering over the South Pacific Ocean. Building on this success, the NCKU team continues to advance space technology through its follow-up Lilium CubeSat series to validate space propulsion and deployment mechanisms.

In June 2025, National Cheng Kung University's (NCKU) Human-Powered Submarine Team debuted at the 18th International Submarine Race at the U.S. Navy's David Taylor Model Basin. Despite overcoming mechanical issues and line challenges, the team set a new personal speed record of 3.24 knots with their submarine Pegasus, ranking 6th out of 17 teams in top speed. Guided by advisor Jeng-Horng Chen, the team identified key areas for improving stability and control safety systems. They are currently leveraging this valuable experience to design their third-generation submarine for the 2026 competition in the UK.- The Kibo-RPC Taiwan Preliminary Held at NCKU — Taiwanese Students to Travel to Japan for Final Round in Space Robotics Challenge
The 6th Kibo Robot Programming Challenge (Kibo-RPC) Taiwan preliminary took place on July 13 at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). Co-organized by NCKU, the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA), and Tainan City Government, the event featured 3 to 5-minute team presentations. Out of 307 Taiwanese participants across 77 teams, Team iTron from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University won first place. They will represent Taiwan at the international finals held at Japan's Tsukuba Space Center, competing in space robotics against global finalists.

- NCKU CubeSats Reach New Milestone — Lilium-2 and Lilium-3 Set to Embark on Their Journey into Space
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) developed two 6U CubeSats, Lilium-2 and Lilium-3, scheduled for launch in Q4 2025 via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket into low Earth orbit. Developed with industry and academic partners, the satellites will perform Taiwan's first inter-satellite communication experiments. Lilium-2 features an AI-enabled optical imaging payload for real-time Earth observation and object detection. Lilium-3 conducts Taiwan's first in-orbit electric propulsion test for orbital maneuvers and features deployable mechanisms to boost power and antenna gain. The NCKU Center for Digital Biotechnology and Medical Innovation, alongside the Department of Computer Science and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), hosted the "NCKUxUTS-BCI Workshop" on December 16 at NCKU Cheng Kung Campus. Held under the "NCKU AI International Linkage Program," the event aimed to foster international academic exchange and deepen bilateral collaboration on Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technologies. Professor Sheng-Fu Liang, Director of NCKU’s Institute of Manufacturing Information and Systems, emphasized strengthening academic connections between both universities, cultivating international talent, and jointly pursuing academic excellence and scientific advancement.- Taiwan’s Lilium-2 and Lilium-3 Satellites Achieve Successful Contact, Highlighting NCKU’s Expertise in LEO Satellite Development
The two CubeSats, Taiwan Lilium-2 and Lilium-3, developed by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), were launched into low Earth orbit on November 29, 2025, via SpaceX's Falcon 9 Transporter-15 mission. The NCKU team successfully established communication with both satellites, receiving operational data that confirmed all subsystems were functioning normally. These satellites will perform key in-orbit technology validations, including electric propulsion and sub-GHz communications. This achievement highlights NCKU’s leadership and expertise in low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite development.
