Mental health support for students in NCKU

NCKU places great emphasis on the mental health and well-being of its students and staff, providing comprehensive psychological counseling and support services to address both mental and emotional needs on campus.

Psychological Counseling and Mental Health Promotion Services
The Counselling and Wellness Services Division employs multiple licensed psychologists and social workers who offer individual counseling, group counseling, workshops, and mental health lectures, helping students relieve academic stress and develop emotional regulation skills. The center also provides dedicated resources for students with physical or mental disabilities. In addition, the center organizes “Mindful Relaxation” activities that combine stretching, meditation, breathing exercises, music, and aromatherapy to help students and staff balance their autonomic nervous system and cultivate self-care abilities.

Enhancing Accessibility through Multi-site Counseling and On-campus Mental Health Professionals
NCKU has expanded counseling spaces across campuses, implemented nighttime counseling and dormitory-based psychologists, and offers “Mental Health Adjustment Leave” to enhance accessibility and availability of mental health resources. Each semester, professional psychiatrists are also available on campus, providing confidential consultations to ensure students and staff can seek psychiatric guidance with peace of mind.

Through these integrated services, NCKU aims to raise awareness of mental health, reduce stigma, and foster a campus culture where seeking help is recognized, encouraged, and supported rather than labeled.

  1. Mental Health Adjustment Leave
NCKU has strengthened its counseling services by implementing “mental health adjustment leave,” deploying on-site counselors in dormitories, and offering evening counseling sessions. These measures enhance accessibility to psychological support, provide students with more opportunities to rest and seek guidance.

  1. Student Consultation Services
NCKU provides comprehensive individual counseling services for students, offering one-on-one sessions to help them understand and cope with psychological difficulties, and assigning professional counselors based on needs. The services include initial consultations, regular counseling, and resource referrals, strictly adhering to confidentiality regulations, with clear procedures for absences, leave, and termination to ensure effective use of counseling resources.

  1. Mindfulness and Stress-Relief Activity
NCKU’s Counselling and Wellness Services Division organizes the “Mindfulness and Relaxation” activity, combining stretching, seated meditation, and breathing exercises with music and essential oils to help participants release stress, balance the autonomic nervous system, and cultivate self-care and emotional regulation skills amid busy lives. NCKU continues to promote mental health awareness through courses, general education classes, and introductory seminars, making psychological resources more recognized and reducing stigma.

  1. Resident psychiatrist at NCKU
Each semester, NCKU has on-campus professional psychiatrists available, and students and faculty can schedule consultations through the university’s counseling system. All consultation content and records are handled and stored confidentially, allowing those seeking mental health support to safely share their concerns and receive professional advice from a psychiatric perspective.
