Drawing on Tainan's rich heritage, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) champions SDG4 by extending learning beyond the classroom to foster social values and community engagement. Through experiential initiatives, students connect with local culture via fieldwork, such as a course on fisheries in the Matsu islands, and develop reciprocal teaching skills by designing and delivering creative lessons to elementary and middle school students. To bridge educational gaps, NCKU established an online tutoring network for under-resourced regions. Furthermore, the "NCKU USR Project" addresses demographic shifts by building an intergenerationally inclusive society, mobilizing social resources to create resilient, supportive communities where older adults can thrive.
- Course of the Exploring Tainan
Located in Tainan, a city with a unique historical and cultural heritage—ranging from prehistoric settlements to indigenous communities and its strategic role in Taiwan’s integration into global trade—NCKU encourages students to step outside the campus and immerse themselves in the local environment. Through this experiential learning, students develop local knowledge, humanistic concern, and interdisciplinary social values.
- Fieldwork at Nangan Lion Market, Matsu
The Department of History’s course on “Fisheries Development and Food Culture” partnered with the Lienchiang County Cultural Affairs Bureau and other institutions. Students conducted fieldwork at the Lion Market in Jieshou Village, Nangan, Matsu. Pre-course preparations in Taiwan, followed by hands-on investigation in Matsu, culminated in the joint publication of a local magazine. This initiative not only deepened students’ understanding of local culture but also allowed them to share outcomes with the wider community.- NCKU [Books] One City-Mobile Library
Through collaboration between the NCKU Library and 8 schools in Tainan, Chiayi, and Kaohsiung, students designed creative lesson plans, educational games, and teaching aids, then personally delivered knowledge to elementary and middle school students. This distinctive service-learning project highlights reciprocal teaching and learning, where students share their knowledge while growing alongside younger learners.- NCKU Online Tutoring Program
NCKU is committed to addressing the educational needs of under-resourced regions by building an after-school online tutoring network. This initiative connects surplus educational resources from well-resourced areas with children who require additional support, creating a safety net that protects and nurtures their learning and growth.- NCKU USR Project
The NCKU USR Project addresses key demographic challenges identified by Taiwan’s National Development Council, such as building an intergenerationally inclusive aging society and promoting positive aging. Guided by the Person–Environment Fit (P–E fit) theory in gerontology, the project emphasizes that when individuals interact harmoniously with their surroundings, they experience greater adaptability, satisfaction, and well-being in later life. This encourages older adults to engage in community activities, maintain healthy lifestyles, and strengthen their attachment to place, thereby fostering more connected and resilient communities.
