NCKU's support for underrepresented groups

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) provides a diverse and publicly accessible support system for underrepresented groups. The university’s Mentoring Handbook offers channels for students to obtain individual guidance, career counseling, and academic support from faculty advisors, ensuring that every student receives care and assistance.

The Student Assistance Division provides various forms of financial aid, with dedicated scholarships, living allowances, and emergency assistance for economically disadvantaged students, Indigenous students, and those with disabilities. The Resource Classroom and the Disability Welfare Section offer individualized support, accessible facilities, and services for students and staff with disabilities.

In addition, NCKU has established a gender-friendly campus support system, providing gender-inclusive restrooms and spaces, promoting the values of diversity and equality, and helping students of all gender identities to study and live comfortably on campus.

All of the above resources are fully disclosed on the official website, and students and staff can access and apply for support at any time, ensuring the availability and transparency of assistance.

  1. Teacher Resource Handbook
NCKU has compiled a Teacher Resource Handbook that integrates information on campus safety, financial aid, health and hygiene, and academic counseling. The handbook includes details on the 24-hour campus security center, emergency assistance and housing fee reductions, tuition and fee waivers, promotion of gender equity education, and the Special Education Resource Classroom. Publicly available to both tutors and students, this handbook demonstrates NCKU’s comprehensive support system and its commitment to safeguarding the educational rights of students from disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds.

  1. Gender-Friendly Area
NCKU has established a “Gender-Friendly Area,” which publicly provides a campus map of facilities such as all-gender restrooms, breastfeeding rooms, sanitary pad vending machines, and priority parking for women and families. The website clearly indicates locations and photos across different campuses, ensuring accessibility for diverse gender and vulnerable groups. This demonstrates NCKU’s concrete actions in promoting gender equality and fostering a gender-friendly campus through inclusive infrastructure.

  1. NCKU Student Assistance Division
The Student Assistance Division at NCKU provides comprehensive financial aid and support programs, with publicly available announcements covering disadvantaged students, indigenous students, and students with disabilities. Assistance includes scholarships, tuition waivers, emergency relief, student loans, and special subsidy programs, ensuring that students facing financial hardship can continue their studies without barriers. These publicly accessible measures highlight NCKU’s commitment to educational equity and concrete support for underrepresented groups.

  1. Resource Classroom for Students with Disabilities
NCKU has established a “Resource Classroom” dedicated to supporting students with disabilities. The facility provides accessible learning resources, assistive device lending, and individualized support programs to help students overcome academic challenges. It also offers professional counseling and academic assistance to enhance learning outcomes and campus integration. This initiative demonstrates NCKU’s strong commitment to educational equity and its concrete actions in supporting students with disabilities.

  1. Disability-Friendly Area
NCKU has established the “Disability-Friendly Area,” providing open access to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), implementation guidelines, and educational materials. It also includes manuals on reasonable workplace accommodations and guides for supporting invisible disabilities. This platform helps faculty and students understand disability rights, promotes respect for diversity, and encourages inclusive practices. By aligning with international human rights conventions, NCKU fosters an equitable, friendly, and inclusive campus environment.
