NCKU Fulfills Social Responsibility by Assisting Residents in Rebuilding Homes After Typhoon Danas
Typhoon Danas severely struck central and southern Taiwan, devastating residents’ homes and hampering reconstruction due to shortages of building materials and labor. In response, the Ministry of Education (MOE) mobilized resources from public and private universities to form the “MOE Disaster Relief Technical Team.” National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) promptly joined the initiative, dispatching professional staff from the Office of General Affairs, integrating faculty and students from the Department of Architecture, and coordinating with on-campus architects and construction teams to participate in post-disaster repairs, demonstrating NCKU’s commitment to social responsibility.
On October 22, the Ministry of Education recognized universities and partner companies that actively contributed to relief efforts, expressing gratitude for their expertise and care during a national disaster. NCKU Vice President Jun-Chang Li (李俊璋) accepted a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the university.
To help residents rebuild their homes as quickly as possible, NCKU established a cross-departmental task force that integrates the administrative capacity of the Office of General Affairs, architectural expertise, and technological tools, while establishing a disaster relief network with professional architects. The team coordinates construction crews, monitors quality and costs, and uses drones and laser scanning to generate objective data, ensuring transparent processes and precise allocation of resources.
On-site work is overseen by experienced engineering personnel who track repair progress and manage construction expenses to prevent additional burdens on affected residents. Faculty and students from the Department of Architecture focus on post-disaster surveys and data collection. Using NCKU’s existing drone equipment, they document the damaged areas and verify measurements with laser rangefinders, greatly enhancing the accuracy of damage assessments. This data also serves as a critical basis for distributing relief funds, allowing subsidies to reach affected households more quickly and equitably.
Facing global challenges in sustainable development, NCKU applies its professional expertise to post-disaster reconstruction, responding to local needs and providing tangible support to disaster-stricken areas. The university emphasized that it will continue leveraging its strengths to deepen social engagement and sustainable governance, working alongside local communities to build a more resilient and sustainable future.
