【Industry Leadership Series】Silicon Photonics Commercialization: LandMark Optoelectronics’ AI-Driven Growth
Since its launch in 2022, NCKU’s “Industry Master Lecture” series has invited leading figures from the semiconductor industry to campus to share their perspectives on industry developments and their personal career journeys. The program has received widespread acclaim. The lecture held on the afternoon of March 6 at Hsun-Hui Lecture Hall on the Tzu-Chiang Campus attracted enthusiastic participation from faculty members and students. Attendees seized the opportunity to gain first-hand insights into the rapidly growing optical communications industry and to learn from Chairman Chang’s extensive cross-disciplinary experience.
After assuming the chairmanship of LandMark Optoelectronics in 2018, Chang led the company to further strengthen its expertise in epitaxial wafer technology. Benefiting from the widespread application of silicon photonics and high-speed optical transceivers in AI computing and data center infrastructure, LandMark achieved record-breaking revenue in January 2026. The company’s recent strong stock performance has also made it a major focus of market attention.
In addition to leading LandMark, Chang also serves as chairman of CID Group, a venture capital firm through which he has accumulated over three decades of investment achievements in the technology sector. Often referred to as the “King of Venture Capital,” Chang possesses both engineering and business expertise. After earning his degree in Electrical Engineering from National Taipei University of Technology, he later pursued a Ph.D. in Business Administration. Over the years, he has developed strong capabilities in industry analysis and has accumulated extensive experience in corporate governance, operational management, market strategy, and industrial development planning.
The lecture was opened by Wei-Chou Hsu, Dean of AISSM at NCKU. Chairman Chang then delivered a talk titled “Corporate Opportunities and Talent Development Amid AI Industry Trends.” In his presentation, he explained the reasons behind LandMark’s recent prominence by examining Taiwan’s industrial development background, the evolution of key technologies, and the strategic thinking required to address business challenges.
“LandMark did not suddenly become strong today—we prepared in advance,” Chang remarked. He emphasized that early preparation depends on the ability to anticipate and select the right industry trends. In both investment and corporate management, he noted, the most critical factor is future potential. He encouraged students to continuously evolve alongside industrial transformations and to think carefully about how they can improve themselves in response to changing technological landscapes.
Chang also highlighted the importance of studying the interaction between Taiwan’s industries and the global market. In addition to understanding historical context in order to learn from the past, he recommended that students regularly read economic and industry news to broaden their perspectives and better understand global technological development.
Founded in June 1997 and headquartered in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, LandMark Optoelectronics specializes in the production of III–V compound semiconductor epitaxial wafers using Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) and Indium Phosphide (InP) substrates. The company is currently one of Asia’s largest independent InP epitaxy foundries and is widely regarded as a high-value technology leader within Taiwan’s optical communication supply chain, particularly in the emerging Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) ecosystem.
As the rapid growth of AI computing power places increasing pressure on data transmission infrastructure, technologies such as silicon photonics and CPO have become key focal points for the global technology industry. The lecture not only provided students with deeper insight into AI-driven industry trends and corporate development strategies but also strengthened interaction between academia and industry. Through direct dialogue with industry leaders, students gained inspiration from both macro-level industry perspectives and practical experience, enabling them to further reflect on their professional positioning and future career paths.
On the afternoon of March 6, the “Industry Master Lecture” hosted by the semiconductor academy at NCKU invited Ching-Yi Chang, Chairman of LandMark Optoelectronics Corp., to deliver a talk on campus. During the lecture, he analyzed the reasons behind LandMark’s recent prominence and discussed Taiwan’s industrial development from technological and business perspectives. Audience members actively seized the opportunity to ask questions and seek advice, gaining valuable insights from the exchange.
