The largest extant physeter macrocephalus skeletal specimen in Taiwan will be open for viewing. On February 20, World Whale Day, the Ocean Conservation Administration, (OCA) subsidized the National Cheng Kung University to set up "The Nanying Marine Conservation and Education Center" on the Annan campus to display the records of cetacean rescue missions over the years and the practice scene of marine conservation work. It is expected to bring visitors completely different knowledge and practical learning opportunities, implement marine life conservation and education, and deepen the university's social responsibility.

Today (February 20), the unveiling ceremony was held at the NCKU Annan Campus. It is the first regional marine conservation education center and a new milestone in marine conservation education. In recent years, the Taiwan government and the private sector have been actively involved in the protection and conservation of marine species; at the unveiling ceremony, many units sent representatives to attend the meeting. "The Nanying Marine Conservation and Education Center" plans to have physical and interactive exhibitions, and it is expected that groups will be able to visit by appointment in the future.

Hsiang Wen Huang, Director-general, Ocean Conservation Administration, (OCA) said that Chengda University's efforts in cetacean conservation over the past 10 years are obvious to all. Cetacean rescue requires cross-unit cooperation. In marine conservation, cetaceans are the beginning and an intermediary. I hope that through the education center, everyone will have a better understanding of the ocean and achieve a wider level of cooperation.

Pei-Jung Lu, the Secretary-General of NCKU delivered a speech, saying that Chengda University has always been a university capable and willing to undertake social responsibilities. Up to now, cetacean conservation is a part of social responsibility. The establishment of "The Nanying Marine Conservation and Education Center" is a clear statement of the courage to undertake academic and social responsibilities, and hopes that the center will promote Taiwan's cetacean conservation to the world.

"The Nanying Marine Conservation and Education Center" is the most special exhibition center among the education exhibition fields in Taiwan. The main exhibits include physeter macrocephalus skeleton specimens, beaked whale skeleton specimens and Omura whale skeleton specimens. The contents of the on-site display include the introduction of cetaceans, cetacean rescue missions, collection of marine biological specimens, etc. In addition to static exhibitions such as text, images, and specimens, the exhibition space also extends to the specimen processing and dissection room of Marine Biology and Cetacean Research Center. Guided explanations provide audiences with a sense of presence and close-up live observation of marine conservation tasks.

Hao-Ven Wang said that the physeter macrocephalus skeleton hanging in the exhibition hall is the largest physeter macrocephalus skeleton specimen in Taiwan, and it is also the protagonist of the world-renowned physeter macrocephalus gas explosion, and it is an unforgettable memory for many Tainan people. That year, it attracted heated discussions among scientists at home and abroad, and the National Geographic Channel even produced special in-depth reports. Today, the physeter macrocephalus skeletal specimen is preserved in "The Nanying Marine Conservation and Education Center" and is open to visiting and witnessing the important chronicle of marine conservation in Taiwan.
