In the wake of the release of the 2024 General Scholastic Ability Test results, various university rankings have been unveiled. Following the "Favorite University Students by Corporations Survey" published by "Cheers" magazine in January, the "2024 Favorite University Students Survey" by "Global Views Monthly" in late February, the "2024 Favorite University Survey" by "1111 Job Bank," and the "University Brand Strength Report" released by "104 Job Bank." National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) achieved first place in all four of these rankings.

President Meng-Ru Shen pointed out in a recent interview that the recognition of NCKU students by external entities is primarily attributed to their teamwork, ability to learn new things, and resilience in the face of setbacks. These qualities align with the indicators emphasized in various institutional evaluations. The assessment criteria in "Global Views Monthly" include six traits highly valued by enterprises: work attitude, emotional intelligence (EQ), knowledge and skills, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities. According to the survey results from "1111 Job Bank," the abilities most valued by employers are teamwork, communication skills, enthusiasm, stress resistance, and quick learning. "Cheers" magazine proposed nine indicators, including professional knowledge and skills, international perspectives and language abilities, willingness to learn, adaptability, innovation, interpersonal communication and teamwork, problem-solving adaptability, interdisciplinary integration, and digital tool application skills.

The "104 Job Bank" introduced the University Brand Strength Report, covering ten indicators such as visibility, job competence, future capabilities, industry-academic collaboration, academic strength, personality strengths, alumni salaries, international research and development capabilities, and paper strength. These are considered "soft power" by enterprises. When looking at these rankings collectively, the common threads are teamwork, communication skills, and problem-solving adaptability. Developing these competencies shapes the impression of NCKU in the minds of students, parents, and businesses and gradually transforms it into a profound brand influence.

Reflecting on history, the first president of NCKU, Wakatsuki Michitaka, in 1931, envisioned that students should possess three qualities: broad-mindedness (cooperation), a calm mind (communication), and agility (adaptability). Over the past 90 years, NCKU has inherited the values of "Seek for truth, toil for good," accumulating the ability to cooperate, communicate, and adapt when facing changes in the times. Building on this foundation, President Shen has emphasized the cultivation of not only professional competence but also essential human qualities: kindness, honesty, and humility. Looking at it from these perspectives, understanding why NCKU consistently leads in these rankings goes beyond just being the "favorite of corporations."

"NCKU students understand the principle that there are people beyond ourselves, are not arrogant, and understand the importance of hard work and practical work!" Vice President Woei-Jer Chuang emphasized that teamwork and interpersonal communication are the most profound impressions outsiders have of NCKU. He particularly emphasized that NCKU students have experience collaborating with companies during their time at the university, understanding the requirements of companies and quickly assimilating into corporate culture. About 20-25% of NCKU's research and development funds come from industry-academic collaboration projects, and approximately half of the university's 1,300-plus faculty members participate in joint projects with companies. In recent years, NCKU has collaborated with over a thousand large, medium, and small enterprises annually, establishing joint research and development centers with leading companies such as TSMC, Yageo, Quanta, Accton, AUO, LITE-ON, CSC, Delta Electronics, and ASE, implementing a strategy of win-win cooperation between industry and academia.

Entering the NCKU campus, many are often attracted by the lush and intertwined banyan trees. Vice President Yuh-Neu Chen stated that the spirit of NCKU stretches and extends like the banyan tree, inheriting the past and leading the way forward. These qualities are cultivated from the humanistic foundation, combining professional intelligence and communication coordination, teamwork, and problem-solving, showcasing resilience. "In this era of increasing competition, talents are the foundation of enterprises. It is impossible for enterprises to seek talents only considering obedience without measuring their comprehensive abilities!" NCKU aims to cultivate "knowledgeable individuals" acknowledged by the country and enterprises, not "robots," Vice President Chen said with a smile.

From the motto "Seek for truth, toil for good" to interpreting NCKU's spirit on its 90th anniversary as "Achieve Securely, Prosper Mutually," it implies a pursuit of goodness and caring for society. In terms of teaching, in addition to being the first to launch the general education course "Exploring Tainan," which focuses on understanding history and caring for the land, NCKU's University Social Responsibility (USR) program has been actively promoted by the Ministry of Education. To date, there are over 3,000 courses related to SDGs and social practices. In 2023, NCKU won two first prizes in the "Global Views Monthly" University Social Responsibility Awards for "Local Integration" and "Welfare Symbiosis." This year, NCKU has five projects, including "Collaboration in Difficult Areas," "Lunch in Rural Primary and Secondary Schools," and "People Looking for Trees," making it the school with the most nominations.

Over the years, 220,000 alumni at home and abroad have become the best representatives of NCKU's collaboration, communication, and adaptability. Whether staying in Taiwan to contribute or returning to Taiwan after completing their studies, senior alumni who have created their own business models are willing to support newcomers, building a good reputation together. Stepping onto the campus, standing in the "Sun Yun-hsuan Green Building Research Building - Magic School of Green Technologies" in the Li-Hsing campus, donated by outstanding alumnus Mr. Chung-hua Cheng, it is a world-class energy-saving landmark, demonstrating NCKU's philosophy of sustainable development. Located in the Victory campus, the "Cheng Kung Macronix Innovation Center," donated by outstanding alumnus Mr. Miin Wu, is a cross-disciplinary venue with the goal of smart computing and innovative research and development, revealing NCKU's determination to move towards innovation. Overlooking the campus, these two landmarks echo the large banyan tree group in the Rongyuan on the Guangfu campus, showcasing collaboration, communication, and adaptability, fully demonstrating NCKU's brand influence.

As a university based in Tainan, the historical capital, National Cheng Kung University has worked from its location to create a responsible and trustworthy brand. According to the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Impact Rankings, NCKU ranked 24th in the world, achieving the first place in Taiwan for four consecutive years. This demonstrates that the efforts over the years have achieved significant results. However, facing the rapidly changing world situation, NCKU knows that surpassing existing patterns and overcoming bottlenecks depends on mutual cooperation between teams. This is also the philosophy repeatedly emphasized by President Shen in promoting school affairs: Only through interdisciplinary, innovation, and international cooperation can academic excellence be truly achieved, fulfilling the purpose of using science for the benefit of society. Only in this way can the influence of NCKU be deepened, moving towards becoming an international exemplary university leading the era.
