NCKU Computer Science Students with Disabilities Embrace Challenges and Achieve Remarkable Success
Two students from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) have overcome physical challenges to bravely pursue their dreams. Not only have they excelled academically, but they have also achieved remarkable success in their professional fields. Their spirit inspires their peers and faculty, spreading a positive and encouraging message.
Bo-Cheng Zhan, a student from the Institute of Computer and Information Engineering, began his undergraduate studies at NCKU's Department of Computer Science in September 2009. After completing his bachelor's degree, he continued to pursue a master's degree in computer science during the 2013 academic year. In the following year, he applied for direct admission to the Ph.D. program but returned to the master's program in the second semester of the 2023 academic year due to personal reasons. On June 25, 2024, he successfully passed his graduation oral defense and is expected to complete his master's degree this year. On the day of the oral defense, Department Chair Shyh-Hau Wang and advisor Professor Yeim-Kuan Chang had a deep conversation with Zhan's parents, offering their blessings and encouragement.
Another student, Pei-Rong Guo, who is about to enter her senior year, joined the undergraduate program in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering in the 2021 academic year. She is currently mentored by Associate Professor Chien-Chung Ho. In June 2024, Guo, along with her team members Bo-Ai Chen, Shao-Qi Zheng, and Guan-Ying Pan, participated in the Undergraduate Project Exhibition held on June 7. Their project, titled "Left Ventricle Ejection Fraction Assessment in Echocardiograms Using Deep Learning," was guided by Associate Professor Ming-Long Wu and stood out among 90 groups, securing second place.
The families of these two students have played a crucial role in their educational journeys, providing unwavering support and companionship while overcoming various challenges and difficulties together. The support of their families has undoubtedly been a significant driving force behind their academic and personal achievements, but the primary credit goes to the students' own persistence and determination.
NCKU's Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering actively supports the learning needs of students with disabilities by providing dedicated learning spaces and establishing accessible ramps. The department emphasizes students' personal growth and professional development, offering continuous guidance and encouragement, and demonstrating inclusivity. Moving forward, the department will continue to deepen its efforts to provide ample learning opportunities and support for all students, encouraging them to realize their potential and bravely pursue their goals.
