NCKU President Dr. Meng-Ru Shen remarked that Tainan, as both a cultural capital and a technological hub, has a strong synergy with NCKU’s development. This connection fosters the university’s integration with the city’s progress and character. Dr. Shen expressed his deep appreciation for Professor Chang, highlighting his values of “gratitude, appreciation, and giving back.” NCKU is distinct in not only emphasizing professional expertise but also dedicating efforts to life and humanities education. Hosting Professor Chang’s collection exhibition is an invaluable opportunity for the university.
Born in Hong Kong, Professor Chang pursued higher education in the United States, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a Master’s degree in Anatomy and Histochemistry from Tufts University School of Medicine, and a Ph.D. in Pathology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine. He is a globally recognized neurocytologist, pathologist, toxicologist, and environmental health scientist. Currently, he serves as an Emeritus Professor of Pathology and Pharmacology/Toxicology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and as a Visiting Chair Professor at NCKU’s College of Medicine, where he actively supports the university's transformation and internationalization.
Beyond his contributions to medical research, Professor Chang is a passionate art collector who believes art should be shared with the public. Since 2011, he has collaborated with various cultural institutions across Taiwan, including Tainan Cultural Affairs Bureau, Xinying Cultural Center, Tainan Art Museum, and Tainan Main Library, to host exhibitions and share his collection with a wider audience.
Themed The Insightful Eye, the exhibition emphasizes the role of art and aesthetic education in enhancing moral character. Through a curated selection of artworks, Professor Chang explores the concepts of virtue and the ideal of a "gentleman." The collection features a variety of artistic forms, including thangka paintings, bodhisattva sculptures, depictions of Dharma, floral and landscape pieces, calligraphy, and more, expressing values like kindness, integrity, and cultivation. Visitors can view more than 30 works, including pieces by masters such as Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Pu Xinyu, and Fan Zeng, along with creations by lesser-known artists.
Professor Chang stated that the exhibition is more than a display of art; it aims to inspire visitors' minds and cultivate their aesthetic and moral sensibilities. Each piece conveys profound messages, such as “Do not judge by appearance,” “Self-reflection and awareness,” and “Unstained despite adversity,” offering life lessons and moral values to the audience.
In addition to its educational significance, the exhibition also caters to art enthusiasts by featuring several top-tier masterpieces. Professor Chang will deliver a special lecture on the theme of The Insightful Eye on November 6.
