“Campus Encounter with the White Lady” Marked the Fuxing Peking Opera Troupe's Third Visit to NCKU
Chia-Han Yang, Associate Artistic Director of the NCKU Art Center, expressed that the collaboration between Artistic Doorways and Professor Wei-Chien Ma's traditional opera and performing arts courses marked the third time the Fuxing Peking Opera Troupe had come to NCKU. Students have gained abundant experiences. Each collaborative performance brings new artistic stimulation to the campus, allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of the essence and charm of Peking opera through active participation.
The Fuxing Peking Opera Troupe's activities at NCKU were vibrant and diverse on that day. In the morning, they participated in the "Peking Opera Music Special Research" course led by Professor Te-Yu Shih of the Institute of Arts Studies at NCKU. The course combined both academic theory and hands-on practice, guiding students to explore the charm of Peking opera music and vocal techniques. In the afternoon, the troupe collaborated with the "Hello Art" program and interdisciplinary programs from the College of Liberal Arts, sparking new ideas by integrating Peking opera with various academic disciplines. Students experienced the physical endurance required for the "dwarf performance" (a traditional clown technique in opera), as well as reenacting the iconic scene of Suz-hen Bai and Xu Xian's wedding from The Legend of the White Snake. In the evening, the troupe further engaged with the "Artistic Action and Cultural Space" course by Professor Wei-Chien Ma, where they demonstrated and discussed the physicality and ritualistic norms of opera performers, delving into how contemporary art and cultural spaces could uncover new possibilities.
Associate Professor Wei-Chien Ma from the Graduate Institute of Arts at NCKU explained: "This time, we specially invited the Fuxing Peking Opera Troupe from the National Taiwan University of Arts. We are grateful for the support of the NCKU Arts Center and the Trend Education Foundation, which has made each aspect of this event more complete. Not only does it allow traditional Peking opera to be more deeply experienced and understood in an academic environment, but it also transforms academic theory and practical experience into valuable learning journeys for students."
The successful execution of this arts and traditional opera promotion event owes special thanks to the members of the Peking Opera Troupe: Yi-Shu Li, Min-Fang Kuo, Min-Ju Chao, Shih-Chung Pan, Yu-Bai Chen, and Min-Zhan Wu, who traveled south to participate. Additionally, we appreciate the support of the Trend Education Foundation, represented by Xiao-Wen Dong and Lang Qin. Through the collaboration and efforts of the team, the traditional opera art has left a deep and beautiful impression in the academic realm, opening up more possibilities for future arts promotion and sustainability.
