Department of Law at NCKU Hosts Community Legal Education Program on Elderly Rights Protection
As Taiwan moves toward becoming a super-aged society, safeguarding the rights of the elderly has become a shared challenge. Building on the achievements of the New Perspectives on Elderly Rights lecture series co-organized in 2024 with the Tainan Land Law Society, the Department of Law at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has once again received support from the Ministry of Education’s Law-Related Education for Schools and Communities Program. In 2025, the program continues under the leadership of Associate Professor Wan-Ju Yeh, who, together with her team, is organizing a new series of lectures focusing on issues most relevant to older adults. Topics include physical and mental health and the long-term care system, guardianship and inheritance, tax planning and wills, and fraud prevention for seniors.
The most recent lecture, held on August 30 at the Yujing Farmers’ Association in Tainan City, drew enthusiastic participation thanks to the strong support and promotion efforts of General Manager Wen-Chou Chuang. The session featured Hsiao-Li Tai, General Manager of Luxury Sunny Development Construction CO., LTD., who spoke about opportunities and succession planning related to the transformation of farmland factories. In addition, Attorney Chih-Chien Chang shared insights into common issues encountered in land partition practices. The lecture addressed the most pressing legal needs of senior community members, guiding them through challenges in health, caregiving, and asset protection. Through clear and practical presentations, participants were encouraged to prepare for active and fulfilling aging. The atmosphere was lively, with vibrant exchanges and strong engagement throughout the event.
This initiative reflects the spirit of University Social Responsibility (USR) by extending legal expertise to the community, channeling academic resources into local contexts, and addressing the real-life concerns of seniors. By combining legal education with professional services, the program not only strengthens social care but also amplifies the influence of legal scholarship, setting a model for interdisciplinary collaboration and collective well-being. The organizing team hopes to continue deepening community engagement, ensuring that legal research and teaching remain rooted in everyday life, fostering local development and intergenerational inclusion, and ultimately achieving the long-term goals of contributing knowledge to society and giving back to the community.
Aligned with the Ministry of Education’s call for law schools to advance community-based legal education, the NCKU Department of Law incorporates lectures, services, and consultation activities to broaden students’ social awareness and service experience while strengthening seniors’ legal literacy and risk prevention. The next session, titled Preventing the Misuse of Farmland by Fraudulent Schemes, will be held on September 20 in Ximei Village, Shanhua District, Tainan City. Local seniors and community members are warmly invited to attend, with legal knowledge sharing and consultation services available on-site.
