After a video presentation showcasing the university’s current achievements, he thanked the alumni for their long-standing support and praised the association’s professionalism. Shen highlighted NCKU’s 94-year history and the university’s preparations for its centennial celebration, emphasizing continued growth in education, research, industry collaboration, and international development—particularly in attracting outstanding new students. Chief Secretary and Director Wei-Cheng Lo of the Alumni Center also guided alumni on a nostalgic journey through the evolving campus, from the main library and the cross-disciplinary “Future Pavilion” to the renovation of the NCKU Museum, reflecting a balance of modernization and heritage.
General Affairs Director Jian-Hong Wu shared updates on the Green and Safe Campus initiative, including professional care for century-old banyan trees, seasonal flower-planting programs, and efforts to create an open campus integrated with the surrounding city.
Expanding Outreach in East Malaysia
Malaysia remains one of NCKU’s most vibrant overseas alumni hubs. Building on annual traditions such as the mathematics, science, and business competitions and the celebrated NCKU Night in Kuala Lumpur, this year’s delegation extended its reach to East Malaysia. Before the main event, Chief Secretary and Director Wei-Cheng Lo of the Alumni Center led four senior administrators to Sarawak, accompanied by Malaysian Alumni Association President Wen-Han Chen and Vice President Chien-Jung Wang, to deepen alumni connections. The Sarawak gathering, held September 11 at the CITY ONE Megamall Shangri-La Banquet Hall in Kuching, was chaired by alumnus Nan-Yang Peng and sponsored by alumnus Ying-Mao Kuo, a distinguished recipient of the 2025 Global Outstanding Overseas Alumni Award from Taiwan’s Overseas Community Affairs Council.
The NCKU team presented commemorative caps to attending alumni, who donned them for group photos in a heartfelt show of solidarity and pride.
ASEAN Talent Development and Industry Collaboration
On September 13 in Kuala Lumpur, NCKU and E.SUN Commercial Bank held the ASEAN Talent Development Internship Agreement Signing Ceremony, officially launching a partnership to foster talent in Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Witnessed by Taiwan’s Deputy Representative Cheng-Min Pu, the agreement builds on a February 2025 memorandum of understanding and reflects a shared commitment to New Southbound talent development. The initiative aims to cultivate professionals with both technical expertise and global perspectives, strengthening industry-academia cooperation and injecting new momentum into Taiwan–ASEAN collaboration.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Minister Cheng-Min Pu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia. Representing the two parties were Chief Secretary Wei-Cheng Lo, and Deputy General Manager Kuang-Yi Hung of E.SUN Bank. Malaysian NCKU Alumni Association President Wen-Han Chen (Civil Engineering, Class of ’84), Vice President Chien-Jung Wang (Materials Science, Class of ’92; M.S. ’94), and board members Shun-Yung Chang (Civil Engineering, ’96), Pao-Ling Wu (Foreign Languages, ’00), Chung-Chih Tsai (Civil Engineering, ’84), Yu-Chen Chen (Foreign Languages, ’82), Ling-Yu Tsai (Accounting, ’90), Chen-Hui Yen (Chemical Engineering, ’79), Chien-Ti Kao (Mechanical Engineering, ’74), Tse-Sung Huang (Mechanical Engineering, ’80), and Fu-Tsai Hsiao (Civil Engineering, ’78) were also present, bearing witness to this new milestone in ASEAN talent development cooperation.
This partnership builds on the memorandum of understanding signed in February 2025 between NCKU and E.SUN Bank on internship and employment collaboration. With this new agreement, the two parties officially launched a joint talent-training initiative covering Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The collaboration reflects their shared commitment to New Southbound talent development, aiming to nurture outstanding professionals with both technical expertise and a global perspective, creating a win–win situation for academia and industry while injecting new momentum into the future development of Taiwan and ASEAN countries.
In addition, NCKU highlighted its talent cultivation program with Malaysia’s BBSB Holdings Sdn Bhd, which took effect on July 1, 2025. During the NCKU Night banquet in Malaysia, President Meng-Ru Shen and BBSB founder Datuk Chen-Yuan Chen, an alumnus of NCKU’s Department of Civil Engineering, presented the partnership. International Affairs Vice President Sun-Yuan Hsieh and Alumni Association President Wen-Han Chen joined them for a commemorative photo. This collaboration not only deepens industry–academia cooperation and strengthens alumni bonds but also exemplifies how NCKU graduates continue to give back to their alma mater and create a positive impact on society.
Advancing Recruitment and Student Development
The delegation participated in the 40th Mathematics and Science Competition and the 4th Business Competition, both organized by the Malaysian NCKU Alumni Association. Drawing 330 teachers and students from 44 secondary schools, these competitions showcased the academic potential of Malaysian youth. Following the contests, NCKU hosted an admissions briefing to encourage students to pursue further studies at the university.
Notably, Malaysian enrollment through these competitions and the Outstanding Student Recommendation Program reached a record high this year, underscoring the success of NCKU’s evolving recruitment strategy. The delegation also conducted admissions briefings and interviews in Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur on September 13 and 14, laying the groundwork for focused recruitment in East Malaysia.
A Shared Path Forward
This Malaysian visit reinforced NCKU’s deep connections with its alumni community and expanded opportunities for academic and industry collaboration.
Events such as NCKU Night and the mathematics, science, and business competitions have become vital bridges for sharing knowledge, experience, and tradition between the university and its overseas graduates. Looking ahead, NCKU will continue to uphold its motto of “seeking truth to attain knowledge,” providing global platforms for academic and practical development, attracting talented students from around the world, and working hand in hand with its alumni to create a brighter future.
