The Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU HOE) grandly celebrated its 70th anniversary and hosted an alumni homecoming event today (November 8). The activities began at 9 a.m. at Ge-Chi Hall (格致廳) and the Department of Hydraulic Engineering Building on the NCKU campus, followed by a celebratory dinner in the evening at Shangri-La’s Far Eastern, Tainan (香格里拉遠東飯店), creating a lively and festive atmosphere. The ceremony invited NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen (沈孟儒) to deliver a speech, and a congratulatory video message from the President of Taiwan Ching-Te Lai (賴清德) was played, recognizing and celebrating the department’s 70 years of outstanding contributions.

70 Years of Deepening Expertise – Witnessing Taiwan’s Water and Marine Development

Since its establishment in 1955, NCKU’s Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering has adhered to the principle of “deepening expertise, practicing innovation, and serving society,” accompanying Taiwan’s transformation from an agricultural society to a modern nation. The department has witnessed significant national progress in water resources development, harbor construction, disaster prevention technology, and smart water management. Over the past 70 years, faculty, students, and alumni have contributed globally across government, academia, and industry, leaving a profound impact from river management and coastal protection to sustainable marine management. Currently, the department has over 6,000 alumni who continue to contribute to national development in disaster prevention, environmental sustainability, and marine technology.

Anniversary Celebration Brings Together All Sectors – Passing on Glory, Creating New Horizons

This year’s celebration carried the theme “Seventy Years of Water and Marine Glory, A New Chapter of Centennial Sustainability (七十年水海榮光,百年永續新章)”. President of the Alumni Association Po-Shan Yu (游保杉) welcomed distinguished guests and alumni in his opening speech. NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen emphasized: “Water resources are the foundation of national development. Without water, there is no high technology. The Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering and related disciplines are key forces supporting the nation’s infrastructure.”

A video message from President Ching-Te Lai followed, encouraging the department to continue its mission of “Smart Water Management, Green Oceans, and a Sustainable Nation (智慧水利、綠色海洋、永續國家)”, cultivating a new generation of engineering leaders with international vision and social responsibility.

Director of the Water Resources Agency (水利署), Yuan-Peng Lin (林元鵬), also attended to offer congratulations and acknowledged the department’s long-standing contributions in training outstanding hydraulic engineering talents for national development. Department Chair Dong-Jing Dong (董東璟) subsequently presented a departmental report and future vision, recognized outstanding alumni, and awarded scholarships, highlighting the spirit of innovation and continuity within the department community.

United in Celebration – Seventy Years of Glory Begin a New Chapter

The afternoon featured “70th Anniversary Special Activities in Hydraulic Engineering”, including bridge, Chinese chess, fluid dynamics competitions, a non-stop singing concert, and outdoor excursions, allowing alumni of different generations to socialize and exchange experiences in a relaxed atmosphere. The evening culminated with a grand dinner at Shangri-La’s Far Eastern, Tainan, strengthening alumni bonds and celebrating the 70-year glory of NCKU HOE.

Looking Ahead: Smart Water Management • Green Oceans • Sustainable Nation

At this milestone of “Seventy Years,” the NCKU HOE is advancing toward a new vision in education and research. Facing challenges such as extreme weather, sea-level rise, and urban resilience, the department actively promotes cross-disciplinary integration and international collaboration, combining artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and big data to develop smart disaster prevention and intelligent water environment management, expanding the international impact of Taiwan’s hydraulic engineering technology. This is not only an academic mission but also a commitment to safeguarding the nation, protecting citizens, and practicing sustainability.

Secretary General of NCKU and Professor of HOE Wei-Cheng Luo (羅偉誠) stated: “The 70th anniversary is not just a reflection on the past but also a starting point for a new journey. Our predecessors laid the foundation with wisdom and perseverance. In the next 70 years, we will pursue innovation and responsibility to create new glory in water and marine development.”

The 70th anniversary celebration of NCKU’s Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering saw over 300 alumni return to campus to join the festivities.
