The highly anticipated annual event for high school students, the 19th Bicycle Festival at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), was held over two days from March 7 to 8, with an opening ceremony taking place on the morning of March 7. This year’s festival adopted the theme “Set Your Orbit, Chase New Planets,” symbolizing the hope of guiding high school students toward their goals and helping them enter their own “orbit” as they bravely explore the unknown.

The two-day festival featured a wide range of activities, including the Department Expo and other events related to university admissions, as well as a series of interactive exhibitions and experiential programs. These activities were designed to provide visiting students and parents with comprehensive and practical information about higher education while also offering an opportunity to experience firsthand the diverse academic resources and vibrant campus life of NCKU as a comprehensive research university.

As many students are currently facing important decisions regarding their future studies, the event attracted numerous high school students from central and northern Taiwan who traveled south to participate. They came to gain deeper insight into NCKU’s academic departments and learning environment. Throughout the festival, activity venues were bustling with visitors, filling the campus with youthful energy and anticipation for the future.

On the morning of March 7, Yuh-Neu Chen, Secretary-General Wei-Cheng Lo, Dean of Student Affairs Liang-Yi Hung, Director of General Affairs Chien-Hung Wu, Vice President for International Affairs Sun-Yuan Hsieh, and other university officials joined principals from several high schools—including Tainan First Senior High School, National Tainan Girls' Senior High School, National Tainan Second Senior High School, and National Chia-Chi Senior High School—as well as representatives from the student association in cycling into the ceremony venue.

During the opening ceremony, Vice President Chen drew a commemorative ticket symbolizing the “entrance to dreams” from a giant invitation card. The ceremonial gesture marked the energetic and enthusiastic launch of this year’s Bicycle Festival.

In her remarks, Vice President Chen noted that bicycles symbolize freedom and companionship. Riding a bicycle into the breeze evokes a sense of happiness and beauty. As NCKU approaches its 95th anniversary, the university has accumulated substantial strengths and resources in teaching, research, and talent cultivation. Continuous efforts in education, international exchange, and interdisciplinary learning have enabled NCKU to provide students with an excellent learning environment and numerous opportunities for practical engagement—from fundamental disciplines and theoretical studies to professional skills and connections with cities and society.

Chen also highlighted that NCKU students have been ranked No. 1 in Taiwan for 12 consecutive years in surveys of employers’ preferred graduates, attributing this recognition to students’ strong professional competence, collaborative spirit, communication abilities, and willingness to face and solve challenges. She added that the Bicycle Festival features a variety of lectures, experiential activities, and guided campus tours led by senior students. Through these events, she hopes that visiting high school students will gain a deeper understanding of NCKU and find inspiration for their future academic directions.

Principals Tsai-Ku Liao, Ching-Tsai Hung, Yan-Hsu Lin, and Yun-Ju Chen all expressed similar views, noting that the festival had been thoughtfully organized and offered diverse activities that allow high school students to better understand NCKU’s academic programs and abundant resources. They wished the participating students a rewarding experience and success in their future academic journeys.

Shou-Heng Chiang, President of the NCKU Student Association, encouraged visiting students to pay close attention to the unique characteristics and specialties of each department while exploring the booths. He also invited them to experience the pace of life at NCKU and the distinctive atmosphere of Tainan. Meanwhile, Bicycle Festival Chief Organizer Yi-Cheng Wang encouraged high school participants to actively engage with students from different departments during the two-day event and gain a clearer understanding of their own future aspirations.

The main venue for the festival was located on the Kuang-Fu Campus, with activities extending to departmental buildings across campus, showcasing the diverse strengths of NCKU. Academic-themed activities included the Department Expo, Admissions Guide, and University Blueprint, which provided high school students with essential information about academic programs, university planning, and student experiences to help them better understand potential study pathways.

The festival also featured several immersive exhibition projects. The immersive theater performance “The Confused: When the World Stops Giving Answers” invited high school students to experience university life and self-exploration. The sensory interactive exhibition “Tracing Light Through the Forest” encouraged participants to reflect on their concerns, write down their worries, and engage in meaningful conversations with NCKU students. Another highlight, “Village of Thoughts,” combined elements of an escape room and interactions with NPC characters in a live puzzle-solving game, helping students break away from fixed frameworks and reflect on the conventional choices often presented in life.

Additional activities included stage performances celebrating youth culture, creative markets, food stalls, and various interactive games.

A student surnamed Hsu from Yunlin Bliss And Wisdom Senior High School shared that it was his first visit to the NCKU campus and that he felt a lively, passionate, and free atmosphere. One of the program sessions, titled “What Can You Do After the GSAT?”, reminded him not to waste time during the period after the exam, and the advice on interview preparation was especially helpful. Teacher Wu, who accompanied the group, said that a total of 35 students and 44 parents from the school attended the festival on March 7. She noted that the interactions at the departmental booths were excellent and that the overall program was rich and engaging, providing students with valuable insights.

Students Lin and Tsai from Taichung were particularly impressed by the sensory interactive exhibition “Tracing Light Through the Forest 《森間溯光》.” They both remarked that the interactive experience truly touched their inner thoughts and inspired reflection. They also praised the overall planning of the Bicycle Festival.

The Bicycle Festival is an annual event held every March at NCKU, with 2026 marking its 19th edition. The event is primarily organized by students and integrates resources from colleges, departments, and administrative units across the university. Through thoughtfully designed activities that resonate with the needs of high school students, the festival aims to guide participants in exploring their interests, envisioning their future, and courageously pursuing their dreams step by step.
