NCKU Participates in the 2026 SMART+ Intelligent Manufacturing Expo, AI Service Center Supports Industry AI Transformation
At a critical stage when the global manufacturing industry is accelerating toward smart and digital transformation, the demand for AI applications across industries continues to rise. Starting April 8, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) showcased its cross-domain research achievements at the 2026 SMART+ Intelligent Manufacturing Expo, focusing on “Practical AI Implementation” and “Supply Chain Resilience.” Exhibits spanned multiple areas including maritime logistics, precision sensing, cybersecurity, and smart vehicles. The exhibition not only demonstrated NCKU’s robust R&D capabilities but also illustrated practical pathways for assisting companies in adopting AI applications to enhance smart manufacturing and operational efficiency.
AI Service Center: The “Plug-in Brain” for Industry AI Transformation
Beyond technical showcases, NCKU highlighted key strategic mechanisms for supporting AI transformation across various industries. Since its establishment last year, the AI Service Center has positioned itself as a crucial hub connecting industrial demand with academic research. Acting as a “plug-in brain” during companies’ AI transformation processes, NCKU provides customized AI integration solutions, cross-domain talent training, and connections to industry-academia resources. These efforts help companies identify suitable AI partners and gradually build a complete AI application ecosystem.
Patent Optimization 2.0: Bringing Research Achievements to the Global M&A Market
In parallel with assisting companies in AI adoption, NCKU has strengthened the alignment and commercialization of research results with industry needs. Since 2016, NCKU has implemented a high-quality patent mechanism, which was upgraded to Version 2.0 in 2024, integrating industry intelligence and M&A information into the research lifecycle. Many technologies exhibited this year are already strategically positioned for the international market, accelerating the translation of research into industrial applications while enhancing companies’ competitiveness in global supply chains.
Three Major Tech Zones: AI and IoT at the Frontier
Supported by these strategic and institutional frameworks, NCKU’s R&D achievements were showcased at the exhibition, highlighting technologies with strong commercial potential. The university’s exhibition focused on three core areas: AI and IoT, supply chain cybersecurity, and smart robotics and mobile platforms.
Professor Guang-Yao Luo from NCKU’s Department of Physics presented “Multi-Gas Discrimination Using a Single Metal Oxide Gas Sensor via Physics-Based AI,” overcoming the traditional limitations of single-gas hardware detection and enabling precise multi-gas identification on a single device. Professor Pei-Chun Lin from the Department of Traffic and Transportation developed “Automated Container Defect Detection in Maritime Shipping Using Machine Learning,” significantly reducing human inspection errors and improving logistics management efficiency. Professor Chuan-Pu Liu, NCKU Vice President for Research from the Department of Materials Science, showcased the “Multi-Dimensional Strain Sensing Device” and “Ternary Logic System,” providing more efficient and energy-saving foundational technology for next-generation smart sensors.
In response to growing industrial cybersecurity threats, NCKU strengthened information resilience for smart factories. Professor Chung-Hsien Li from the Department of Electrical Engineering developed a “Query-Based System Anomaly Detection Technology,” which can detect and block potential intrusion threats in real time, ensuring that critical production data and control systems remain secure during digital transformation.
Simultaneously, NCKU continues to advance applications of smart equipment and autonomous systems. Professor Yen-Chen Liu from the Department of Mechanical Engineering demonstrated a “Robot Autonomous Navigation and Spraying System Based on Dynamic Window Algorithm,” showcasing the capabilities of smart vehicles in complex factory or agricultural settings with precise control and dynamic obstacle avoidance.
Amid the ongoing trend of intelligent and digital transformation in global manufacturing, NCKU will continue to deepen industry-academia collaboration and technology transfer, assisting companies in AI adoption, enhancing smart manufacturing capabilities, and promoting industrial upgrading.
