Creating a Unique Graduation Memory: NCKU “Graduation Yacht Party” Integrates Marine Recreation and Environmental Education
When the royal poincianas (flame trees) bloom, it marks the season when graduates embark on new journeys in life. To celebrate, the NCKU Graduates Association and the Sustainability Innovation Club jointly organized a unique “Graduation Yacht Party” in the waters off Anping, Tainan. Leveraging the graduation season concept, the event innovatively integrated marine recreation with environmental education, creating unforgettable alternative graduation memories while encouraging graduates to embrace a blue ocean lifestyle and actively support net-zero sustainability efforts.
The Graduation Yacht Party broke away from traditional campus event formats by relocating the festivities to the vast waters of Anping. Through the scenic coastal cruise, students learned about Tainan’s surrounding marine environment while experiencing the grandeur and vitality of the ocean up close.
Tao, a senior majoring in Political Science, shared: “In the past, most of our recreational activities took place along the shore. This is my first time on a yacht, looking back at the coast and the surrounding environment from offshore. Through the organizers’ guidance, I realized that marine conservation and environmental sustainability are far more than just slogans. This experience has left a deep impression on me.”
In addition to forging new memories on the water, the NCKU Graduates Association emphasized the concept of a “digital detox.” Participants were encouraged to unplug from their mobile phones, step away from social media anxiety, and shift their attention from screens to the shimmering waters and real-life interactions with their peers. Students widely reported that spending time outdoors helped them fully unwind mentally, reconnecting with nature and one another through the refreshing sea breeze.
The Sustainability Innovation Club incorporated multiple green initiatives into the event, focusing on plastic reduction, low-carbon leisure, and a net-zero pledge. No single-use plastic utensils were provided throughout the trip; instead, participants were encouraged to bring eco-friendly containers, learn about marine ecology, and minimize environmental disturbance. Through guided activities, students were introduced to practical ways a net-zero green lifestyle can be seamlessly implemented in daily dining, commuting, and traveling.
“We hope this is not just a one-time party, but a starting point,” stated the Sustainability Innovation Club. “As graduating students enter the workforce, we want them to carry a deep respect for the ocean and a sustainability mindset, becoming a fresh driving force for environmental change.” This yachting event, blending NCKU students' creativity with green principles, successfully allowed graduates to sail toward the future with not only precious memories but also a lasting commitment to protecting the planet.
