On the morning of June 14, the Department of History at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) held the third session of the “Walking Taijiang: Education Outreach Series” at the Wangcheng Community Center in Anping District, Tainan City. Themed “Exploring the Changing Landscapes of Anping from Land, Sea, and Air Perspectives,” this event engaged deeply with the local community and featured two distinguished speakers: Dr. Hsi-Tien Lin, a long-time researcher of Anping’s history and culture, and Dr. Yi-Tien Chen, an expert in community building. Together, they guided participants through a multi-perspective journey across four centuries of Anping’s evolving landscape.
The lecture was organized around three major themes, tracing Anping’s historical development across key periods: the Dutch colonial era in Taoyuan, the Qing dynasty era of Anping, the new canal development during the Japanese colonial period, and the modern transformation of the Anping Port. Using resources such as the relocated Anping Lighthouse, canals and customs posts, historical maps, and modern aerial imagery, the speakers reconstructed the shifting geography and spatial narratives of Anping. Dr. Hsi-Tien Lin drew on years of dedicated research to vividly recount Anping’s layered history, while Dr. Yi-Tien Chen used fieldwork and archival maps to reconnect the audience with the memories of the place. Their insightful and accessible presentations combined intellectual depth with emotional resonance, sparking lively discussion and enthusiastic participation from the audience.
This event was commissioned by the National Academy of Marine Research and organized by the Department of History at NCKU, with generous support from the Wangcheng Borough Office, Ri Ri Ho Homestay, Anping New Vision, Te-Chi Chinese Medicine Shop, and the Chongyi Community Development Association of Anping. Through this lecture, NCKU continues its commitment to promoting marine cultural education and fostering meaningful dialogue between academia and the community. Looking ahead, the university hopes to further deepen its collaboration with local stakeholders and expand research and understanding of maritime history and Anping’s evolving landscape.
