Hosted by the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) varsity table tennis team, the 2026 "14th NCKU Table Tennis Championship" took place for 4 consecutive days from July 24 to July 27 at NCKU Chung Cheng Gym. This year, the scale of the tournament reached a new high, attracting over 1,800 players to register and complete in approximately 860 matches. Continuing its partnership with the NCKU broadcasting team, the event provided live match broadcasts, player statistics, and shot placement analytics, creating a smart table tennis competition that integrates both technology and professionalism.
Yang Chen, co-convener of this year's event and a rising junior in the Department of Physical Therapy at NCKU, stated that while previous tournaments were usually held in August, this year's event was moved up to late July to avoid overlapping with domestic competitions and to align with the venue availability of Chung Cheng Gym. This significantly compressed the overall preparation timeline. With only about one month between the end of final exams and the opening of the tournament, plus handling registration data and list corrections, the team spent considerable time addressing these challenges before initiating payment procedures, which also squeezed the scheduling timeframe. Fortunately, thanks to the united efforts of all team members, the tournament proceeded smoothly. Throughout the process, the team gained valuable experience in workflow arrangement, data processing, and information announcements, which will be fully passed on to the next organizing team.
Continuing the partnership model with the NCKU broadcasting team, this edition not only provided live streaming for fans and the public unable to attend in person, but also delivered various player metrics and analyzed shot placements via AI technology. This helped players and coaches obtain richer match data, enhancing the overall viewing experience. As the tournament scale grows annually, the NCKU table tennis team expressed special gratitude to all sponsors for their strong support, especially long-term partners such as Nittaku Dong-Ying Sports Goods and Tsai's Sports Goods, which provided table tennis tables, equipment, and generous prizes to jointly support the continuous growth of the NCKU Championship.
On the first day (July 24), the elementary school group matches kicked off the tournament. Young players fully concentrated on the court, swinging their paddles fiercely to compete for every single point. They raised their arms and cheered upon scoring, while coaches and teammates at the sidelines cheered enthusiastically; after errors, they quickly adjusted their mindsets and started afresh, filling Chung Cheng Gym with youthful vitality and a passionate competitive atmosphere.
The organizing team noted that each edition of the "NCKU Table Tennis Championship" is not only a competitive arena, but also an important gathering for table tennis enthusiasts across the country, aiming to provide players with opportunities to hone their skills, learn from one another, and catch up with old friends. Whether competitive players striving for top results or leisure players enjoying the fun of table tennis, all are welcome to gather at NCKU Chung Cheng Gym to experience the charm of table tennis together and enjoy the passion and emotion brought by every match.
Aiming to promote table tennis culture in colleges and universities, provide appropriate intercollegiate networking, and make friends through table tennis, the "NCKU Table Tennis Championship" has become one of NCKU's traditional annual sports events. Except for 2021 when it was suspended due to the pandemic, the tournament annually attracts numerous participants from major universities and social groups across the nation, including elite table tennis players and formidable teams. Through the matches, participants exchange skills and share experiences, continuously injecting vitality into domestic table tennis.
