This year (2025) has been designated as “NCKU Sports Year.” During the 94th anniversary celebration, the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Department of Physical Education once again expanded its highly acclaimed Mixed Team Relay Race, inviting faculty and students from across the campus to form teams. The event not only fosters a strong sense of community on campus but also promotes physical fitness while cultivating cross-disciplinary teamwork and collaboration skills. In addition to continuing the “Cross-Disciplinary Group” category (mixed-gender teams spanning three colleges), a “Freshman Group” was specially added to encourage first-year students to actively participate, make new friends, and build lasting connections through the competition. The event attracted over 1,600 participants forming 80 teams, showcasing the vibrant sports energy of NCKU. The preliminary rounds began on October 15 and will continue for five days, with the top 16 teams from each category advancing to the finals on October 29. President Meng-Ru Shen personally attended the opening day of the preliminaries and fired the starting gun to officially kick off the race.
During his speech, President Shen expressed his delight at seeing the students’ smiling faces and encouraged everyone,“I hope students run around campus not just to get to class or exams, but to find partners through sports and maintain their physical health, because good health is the foundation for a sustainable life.” He also noted that the number of teams registered for the Mixed Team Relay Race grew from 28 at the start of the year to 80 this time, demonstrating the event’s popularity and resonance among the campus community. To further motivate participants, President Shen announced additional prizes: all members of the teams advancing to the top eight would receive a voucher for a five-star restaurant, in addition to the originally planned awards. The announcement was met with enthusiastic cheers, creating a lively and electric atmosphere.
The Mixed Team Relay Race embodies the spirit of NCKU students and is a concrete practice of teamwork, empathy, and resilience. First introduced in March this year, the event was extremely well received by students, and it was planned again during the 94th anniversary celebration with improvements and upgrades, aiming to provide an even greater sense of participation for all NCKU faculty and students.
This year, in addition to the continuing Cross-Disciplinary Group (mixed-gender, spanning three colleges), the newly added Freshman Group encourages first-year students to make new friends and integrate into campus life. Registration was enthusiastic, growing from 28 teams at the start of the year to 80 teams with over 1,600 participants, reflecting the strong support and love for sports among the NCKU community. The Department of Physical Education hopes that through this energetic and team-oriented competition, more people will enjoy the fun of sports, deepen teamwork and friendships, connect with one another, and create lasting memories. Participants were also reminded to prioritize safety while enjoying the race.
The 80 participating teams will compete in preliminary rounds over five days. On the first day of preliminaries (October 15), 18 teams gathered on-site, with cheers echoing throughout the course. Following the starting gun fired by President Shen, participants ran with full energy, showcasing teamwork, speed, and determination in every sprint. The top 16 teams in each category will compete in the finals on October 29, promising to deliver the first wave of excitement and high energy for NCKU’s 94th anniversary celebration.
