National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has achieved remarkable success once again. The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) announced the approved results for the 2026 "College Student Research Project." NCKU secured approval for a total of 197 projects, ranking 2nd among universities nationwide. This represents an increase of 34 projects compared to last year's 163, marking a growth of approximately 20%. NCKU stated that the number of applications hit a 5-year high for the university this year, demonstrating students' high level of enthusiasm for research, a thriving academic atmosphere on campus, and outstanding achievements in deepening research education and actively cultivating scientific research talent.

Since 2019, NCKU has been promoting the "Undergraduate Research (UR)" project with the goal of cultivating scientific research talent and strengthening academic potential. Through diverse activities such as laboratory visits, research outcome displays, topical lectures, faculty-student exchanges, and poster competitions, the project guides students to get involved in research early on, building core capabilities including critical thinking, research design, academic communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

The approved projects this year span across fields including technology, medicine, engineering, humanities, social sciences, and sustainable development. They cover forward-looking research topics such as artificial intelligence (AI), smart healthcare, and semiconductor technology, demonstrating NCKU's institutional characteristic of emphasizing both technological innovation, humanistic care, and social practice.

Among these, AI-related research outcomes were particularly impressive. Students utilized AI to construct an early warning system for vascular stenosis in hemodialysis patients, combined electronic noses with deep learning to establish a co-morbidity diagnostic model for colorectal cancer and diabetes, and developed a mediation case prediction system integrating Large Language Models (LLM), showing diverse applications of AI in smart healthcare and smart governance.

In addition, students applied generative AI to educational innovation, building English learning platforms and learning companion robots for children. In key technical domains, research focused on semiconductor materials, high-power electronic heat dissipation, solid-state batteries, and carbon dioxide mineralization, aligning with key national development directions such as AI, semiconductors, and net-zero transition.

Since its launch, the "Undergraduate Research (UR)" project has continued to integrate cross-disciplinary resources and deepen the culture of undergraduate research. It encourages more students to courageously explore and dedicate themselves to scientific research, cultivating outstanding talents equipped with research literacy, innovative thinking, and practical ability to build solid momentum for Taiwan's scientific development and continuously inject new drive into national technological innovation and higher education development.
