National Cheng Kung University's (NCKU) undergraduate student team from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering participated in the 5th Asia-Pacific High-Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence (HPC-AI) Competition. With outstanding information processing capabilities, they clinched the 3rd place and the Best Deep Learning performance award. In early March 2023, they were invited to attend the Supercomputing Asia 2023 (SCA 23), where the awarded students felt extremely honored.
The team, consisting of five students - Cheng Pin-Yi, Huang Lin, Wang Shuo-Fu, Lin Qun-Kai, and Lin Yu-Chi - formed the student team representing NCKU. They competed in the 2022 5th Asia-Pacific High-Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence Competition (2022 APAC HPC-AI Competition). Over the course of six months, they competed against more than 100 students from 24 teams and over 12 countries. During the competition, the students remotely connected to the supercomputer provided by the organizer to write programs and perform calculations. In the final presentation stage, they reported their computational results to the judges via online conference.
The Asia-Pacific HPC-AI Competition, which began in 2018, is held at the same level as world cup events such as the ISC in Germany and the SC in the United States. In its 5th edition in 2022, it was jointly organized by the HPC-AI Advisory Council of Singapore, the National Supercomputing Center (NSCC) of Singapore, and the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) of Australia. The competition took place from May 2022 to November 4, 2022, spanning six months. The awards ceremony was held physically at Supercomputing Asia 2023 (SCA 23) from February 27 to March 2, 2023, in Singapore.
Supercomputing Asia 2023 (SCA23) was jointly organized by supercomputing centers from Australia, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand. It was the first time in 2023 that it was held in conjunction with the High Performance Computing in the Asia-Pacific Region (HPC Asia 2023) international conference. The conference brought together academics and industry professionals for activities including paper presentations, poster displays, and series of seminars, covering topics such as high-performance computing architecture and technology, data center efficiency, and quantum computing, making it one of the two major annual events in the field of high-performance computing.
