Responding to the inaugural Gender Equality Education Day, NCKU hosted a diverse feast of gender equality topics
In 2023, the Ministry of Education designated April 20th as "Gender Equality Education Day" for the first time. The Gender Equality Committee of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) organized a series of diverse and exciting activities from March to May 2023. These activities include four gender issue workshops, seven lectures as part of the Tainan Pink Dot series, discussions with the Taiwan-UK Multidimensional Gender Health Network, a menstrual equity exhibition, and Tainan Pink Dot events. These initiatives aim to continue raising awareness of gender-related issues on campus. For the latest information on these activities, please visit the NCKU Gender Equality Committee's website.
The Gender Equality Committee at NCKU aims to promote awareness of gender equality among faculty, staff, students, and the community through the "Gender Equality Education Day Series of Advocacy Activities" planned for the 112th academic year. These activities seek to provide a continuous and diverse array of gender-related courses, fostering a gradual awakening of self-gender awareness among participants and encouraging them to support a gender-equal society.
The "Gender Issue Workshops" will take place on April 10th, April 24th, May 8th, and May 15th, focusing on "Sexual Justice and Action." These workshops aim to empower students to advocate for gender equality on campus, drawing on their own experiences to develop gender equality advocacy actions. Their efforts will be showcased during the 9th Tainan Pink Dot event in 2023.
The theme of the 9th Tainan Pink Dot event is "Open Table: Diversity of Gender Equality." This event will adopt the concept of a buffet or banquet, featuring a variety of dishes representing different aspects and groups concerned with gender equality. Participants will have the opportunity to explore their preferred topics in depth or learn about unfamiliar issues, allowing these "dishes" to influence their thoughts and perspectives.
The 9th Tainan Pink Dot event, "Responding to International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia," will include activities such as the Taiwan-UK Multidimensional Gender Research Health Network exchange program on April 20th, a menstrual equity exhibition at the NCKU Library on April 27th, seven lectures as part of the Tainan Pink Dot series, and the Tainan Pink Dot event on May 21st, featuring markets, performances, and short talks. Participants are encouraged to wear pink attire to the event.
Starting from March 23rd, 2023, the Tainan Pink Dot series of lectures will consist of seven sessions, featuring speakers such as transgender YouTuber Mirror, Professor Mei-Hua Chen from the Institute of Sociology at National Sun Yat-sen University, Ya-Chen Kuo from the Taiwan Male Association, historian Jin-Yu Xie, and authors Yun-Shu Chang and Tsung-Han Wen. Topics will include transgender rights and challenges, dismantling gender stereotypes, the history of menstruation, gender in traditional banquets, and workplace gender perspectives.
The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include promoting gender equality as the fifth goal and reducing inequality as the tenth goal. The NCKU Gender Equality Committee emphasizes that even mainstream gender groups face oppression and restrictions. Promoting gender equality is not the mission of a specific group but a shared human experience. The promotion of gender equality education aims to eliminate all forms of gender discrimination, stereotypes, and oppression through education, empowering individuals of all gender identities to develop their potential without restrictions based on biological, psychological, social, or cultural gender factors. It also seeks to enhance personal autonomy regarding the body and sexuality, cultivate mutual understanding and respect, and build a safe and inclusive living environment, ultimately fostering a society that values gender justice and individual dignity.
