NCKU Medicine College and National Health Research Institutes declared the new milestone in biomedical talent cultivation
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) College of Medicine and the National Institute of Health (NIH) collaborated on July 6, 2023, at NCKU to hold a bilateral discussion, aiming to concretely implement basic and clinical medical research and expand interdisciplinary biomedical R&D while deepening bilateral academic research cooperation. NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen, Dean Yan-Shen Shan of the College of Medicine, and President Huey-Kang Sytwu of the NIH attended the event, seizing the opportunity to declare the initiation of a new milestone in cross-disciplinary biomedical R&D cooperation between the two institutions, with hopes for even closer collaboration in the future.
President Shen expressed in his speech that the NIH is the best partner for collaboration, and NCKU is not only optimistic about the achievements of collaborations between the College of Medicine and the NIH but also fully committed to providing support in manpower, resources, and administration, to jointly safeguard the health of the people.
Dean Yan-Shen Shan pointed out that the collaboration between NCKU College of Medicine and the NIH has been long-standing, and they plan to advance to deeper research areas such as biomedical, infectious diseases, and cancer research in the future, while also integrating these into programs and talent cultivation. It is hoped that there will be even closer collaboration between the two parties in the future.
President Huey-Kang Sytwu of the NIH expressed gratitude for NCKU's past support and emphasized the institute's mission to enhance medical and health standards, conduct disease research, clinical practice, and promote public health. He stressed that the NIH has no conflicts with top universities in Taiwan and looks forward to utilizing national resources to accomplish more for Taiwan. NCKU is the best partner for the NIH, and he hopes that both parties can advance further based on their existing foundation.
Director Secretary Wen-Chun Hung of the NIH, Vice Director Yueh-Lun Lee of the Academic Development Department, Vice Dean Kuei-Sen Hsu of NCKU College of Medicine, Vice Dean Wen-Chien Ko of NCKU Hospital, and several other dignitaries attended the meeting. Since 1999, NCKU College of Medicine and the NIH have signed agreements for academic exchange and cooperation, agreeing to share resources and promote medical research and talent cultivation. In recent years, the trend of diverse interdisciplinary collaboration has become prominent. NCKU College of Medicine and the NIH have decided to strengthen their collaborative efforts by implementing concrete cooperation plans such as distinctive research projects and deepening program interactions, to cultivate interdisciplinary research teams and support young talents to engage in medical research, jointly creating forward-looking research directions and outcomes.
NCKU College of Medicine and the NIH look forward to connecting resources and research capabilities from north to south, providing bilateral personnel with a more abundant and comprehensive sharing platform and cooperation mechanism. They plan to initially focus on developing cooperation in medical research areas such as cancer medicine and infectious diseases and then expand to various fields such as clinical care, advanced medical materials, regenerative medicine, gut microbiota, and cellular therapy in the future. They also plan to implement cooperative programs to jointly cultivate more interdisciplinary research talents for the country. They hope to seize this opportunity to build a platform for matchmaking between NCKU and the NIH and leverage the biomedical and interdisciplinary professional capabilities and academic resources of both parties to enhance the health and well-being of the people and establish a new ecology of medicine together.
The NIH, established by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, is a research unit dedicated to medical and health research and policy exploration, with a particular focus on translational research in the biomedical field in recent years, actively promoting the establishment of a national alliance for specimen and information platforms to integrate resources and share results. Infectious disease and immunological research with regional characteristics and cancer treatment research have been deeply cultivated in the southern branch of the institute for a long time. NCKU College of Medicine, as the medical school within a national comprehensive university, provides diverse learning environments and emphasizes both humanities and scientific applications. It has been committed to planning research development for characteristic studies and the next generation, continuously exploring medical mysteries, and addressing societal trends and needs.
