Research team of the NCKU's "Taiwan-UK Collaborative Research Project" visited the British Geological Survey.
Associate Professor Hsin-fu Yeh from the Department of Resources Engineering led the research team of the "Taiwan–UK Joint Research Project," which includes Professor Shien-Tsung Chen from the Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering, Professor
Kuo-Chin Hsu from the Department of Resources Engineering, Dr. Ya-Hsin Yang, and Ph.D. candidate Chia-Chi Huang. They visited the British Geological Survey (BGS) from July 10th to 17th, 2023, to exchange ideas and hold discussions on their bilateral cooperation project.
The project, titled "Taiwan–UK Joint Research Project–Groundwater Resources in a Changing Climate," is an internationally collaborative project approved by the National Science and Technology Commission of Taiwan. Associate Professor Hsin-fu Yeh serves as the project leader from the Taiwanese side, while Dr. John Bloomfield is the project leader from the UK side. The project focuses on sharing knowledge, exchanging technologies, and enhancing research capabilities to address common research challenges and societal needs related to groundwater drought in Taiwan and the UK. The project is committed to three research areas: (1) groundwater drought, (2) baseflow analysis in rivers, and (3) forecasting groundwater drought.
During the visit, the team first met with the branch of the British Geological Survey in Wallingford and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) to discuss bilateral cooperation matters. The second stop was the headquarters of the British Geological Survey in Keyworth, where they visited the Groundwater Centre, Environmental Modelling Centre, Environmental Science Centre, Core Store Facility, Geotechnical Laboratory, and Visualisation and 3D Geographical and Geological Information System. Field visits included the Chiltern Hills in southeast England, the Ewelme Watercress Beds irrigated by springs from the chalk aquifer in the village of Ewelme, the hand-dug Maharajah’s Well in Stoke Row, and groundwater monitoring wells at Stonor House.
Associate Professor Hsin-fu Yeh stated that the theoretical development, methods, and unique data of this bilateral cooperation project will provide assessments of groundwater resources and the impact of climate change in Taiwan and the UK. The innovative research outcomes can contribute to water resource and drought management planning. Furthermore, the project aims to establish international cooperation between Taiwan and the UK in hydrological science, produce academically influential research results, and promote long-term academic exchanges between the two sides.
