In the summer of 2023, 23 students from the NCKU-Purdue dual-degree program traveled to Purdue University in the US for a short-term intensive course, returning with enriching experiences. They expressed a strengthened resolve to pursue further studies in the US, encouraging prospective candidates for the 112th academic year to join them. This year's program included not only professional courses and visits to local cultural sites but also introduced new initiatives like the "Intercultural Activities for Engineering Personal Development" series and "English Elevator Pitch Workshops," enhancing students' path toward becoming global engineers.
From July 1st to July 16th, 23 NCKU undergraduate students participated in a short-term intensive program at Purdue University in the United States as part of the NCKU-Purdue dual-degree program. The program included engineering courses taught by Purdue professors, "Intercultural Activities" for engineering personal development, "English Elevator Pitch Workshops", and visits to Purdue's Birck Nanotechnology Center, Nuclear Lab, and Ray W. Herrick Laboratories. Weekends featured cross-cultural picnics and visits to Indianapolis, Lafayette, Chicago, and various museums. Coinciding with Independence Day, students also experienced American culture through baseball games and fireworks celebrations, immersing themselves in international education and local multicultural lifestyles.
During their two-week visit, students not only engaged in professional courses and cultural experiences but also expanded their social circles through various activities. They played sports with Taiwanese students at Purdue and were warmly hosted by Professor Yi-Ping Shih, a distinguished alumnus of NCKU's Mechanical Engineering Department, at his home.
The closing banquet, held at the courtyard of Purdue's Forney Hall, symbolized the connection between tradition and innovation. Professor George Chiu, Associate Dean of Purdue's College of Engineering, encouraged students to become vital bridges between Taiwan and the US and between the two universities, fostering enduring friendships.
The NCKU-Purdue dual-degree program, approved by the Ministry of Education in the 109th academic year, offers 26 slots starting from the 110th academic year. Interested candidates can apply through individual applications or the subject-based test. For those interested in the subject-based test, registration will be open from August 1st at 9:00 AM until August 4th at 4:30 PM on the website of the University Entrance Examination Committee for the 112th academic year.
