NCKU Matsu Micro-College Launches Inaugural Event – Design Co-creation Workshop

Synergy Correlation

NCKU College of Planning and Design, in collaboration with the Matsu International Art Island initiative, organized a "Design Co-creation Workshop" on October 21st and 22nd at Matsu High School. The workshop reflects NCKU's commitment to globalizing local humanities strategies with a focus on "island translation."

Seventeen participants, including Matsu youth working on Taiwan's main island, Matsu high school students, and NCKU graduate students with previous Matsu work experience, converged in Matsu. The workshop's goal was to collaboratively envision the future of the islands. The initiative centers around the translation and revitalization of military Matsu to cultural Matsu, exploring innovative elements of Matsu culture and designing prototypes with Matsu cultural significance. Activities included cultural discourse, creative memorabilia, story marketing, and future planning for the Matsu Art Island extension. The workshop featured a unique blend of on-site experiential teaching, online lectures, and the integration of virtual and real experiences.

Following the signing of the "Matsu Micro-College" memorandum of cooperation between NCKU and Lienchiang County Government last year, the Design Co-creation Workshop is the first in-person program organized in Matsu. The workshop's distinctive features include on-site experiences, design thinking, and conceptual proposals. Over two intensive days, participants visited successfully transformed #26 sites (designed by Architect Chang Shi-Yi in Yilan) and explored tunnels, providing an understanding of the original state of the battlefield bases. Subsequently, they visited the soon-to-be-transformed #46 site and iconic art installations on Nangan, such as "The Sea is My Land," "Turn Corner Project," "Receive Letters in Peace," and "Open." Upon returning to Matsu High School, participants engaged in design thinking and conceptual proposal competitions, with judges including Director Wu Hsiao-Yun of the Lienchiang County Cultural Affairs Department, Executive Director Wu Han-Chung of the Matsu International Art Island, and Director Tsao Hsiao-Yueh of the National Taipei University of Technology's Interaction Design Department.

The Design Co-creation Workshop is the first part of NCKU's Matsu Micro-College initiative for this year. Special thanks to the Ministry of Education's flagship program in the field of humanities and social sciences and the guidance and support from the Lienchiang County battlefield transformation and translation regeneration project. Under the leadership of Project Leader Professor Cheng Tai-Sheng from the Department of Architecture, Dean Chen Jian-Xu of the College of Planning and Design, Assistant Professor Jian Sheng-Fen from the Department of Architecture, Director Yang Chia-Han of the Institute of Creative Industries Design, Professor Huang Chung-Ching from the Common Core Education Center, and Professor Lin Hsuan-Cheng from the Science and Arts Program, along with numerous dedicated assistants and research assistants, actively contributed to the success of the Design Co-creation Workshop. The participants in this workshop will become the seeds for the "NCKU Matsu Micro-College," contributing to the cultural and artistic roots of Matsu's cold war islands and developing a collaborative model for universities and localities worldwide.
