2024 NCKU Science Education Center High School Teacher Workshop receives enthusiastic support from teachers across Taiwan.
The National Cheng Kung University Science Education Center (NCKU SEC) and the Taiwan Science Talent Program Office collaborated again this year to hold a three-day "High School Teacher Workshop - Southern Region" from January 30th to February 1st at the NCKU SEC. Approximately 100 high school teachers from all over Taiwan enthusiastically participated. The workshop featured a rich program including foundational experiment construction, visits to NCKU's core experimental instruments, presentations on astronomy, earth sciences, and space technology, as well as a field trip to the AIDC in Taichung, offering teachers a new scientific experience.
Over the three days, NCKU professors and partners took teachers from across Taiwan on a journey through various fields of natural science. Director Yi Yang of NCKU SEC expressed surprise at the overwhelming response, stating, "We truly feel the needs of high school teachers. As a top university in Taiwan, NCKU is committed to continuing to share and learn with teachers in the future."
On the first day, Professor Rue-Ron Hsu from the Department of Physics at NCKU shared his developed "Light Bulb Practical Teaching Plan" with the teachers, guiding them through basic experimental methods and data analysis to instill a comprehensive scientific research approach and attitude. In the afternoon, the teachers visited NCKU's core laboratories where Director Shyh-Yu Shaw introduced various instruments such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR), Mass Spectrometry, Scanning Probe Systems, Spectrometers, and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Systems, providing insights into the importance of chemical experiments and the latest research findings in chemistry.
Recognizing the diminishing visibility of astronomy and earth sciences among the general public, NCKU SEC planned relevant courses on the second day. Professor Kwan-Lok Li from the Department of Physics introduced basic astronomy, Professor Hui-Chen Kung from the Department of Earth Sciences shared planetary geology, and Professor Chia-Hung Chen from the Department of Earth Sciences introduced research on space weather. In the afternoon, the teachers were guided by Professor Hui-Chen Kung to tour the brand new "Earth Science Museum" and discussed possible practical projects related to rocks and minerals. Professor En-Jui Lee from the Department of Earth Sciences led hands-on seismic instrument activities, while Professor Sung-Ping Chang from the Department of Earth Sciences introduced Taiwan's geological features using an augmented reality sandbox. One of the highlights was the nighttime telescope operation experience led by Professor Kwan-Lok Li, allowing high school teachers to set up telescopes and observe Jupiter for an engaging astronomy experience.
On the third day, NCKU SEC invited Professor Charles Lin from the Department of Earth Sciences to share insights into satellite missions exploring space, covering topics from basic natural teaching to satellite technology and applications, providing teachers with the latest space knowledge. In the afternoon, high school teachers visited AIDC's "Advanced Composite Materials Factory" in Shalu, Taichung, where they learned about AIDC's capabilities in the aerospace industry and were introduced to Taiwan's domestically produced advanced trainer aircraft, the "Brave Eagle."
