The 112th Academic Year National University and College Library Directors Joint Conference: A Gathering for Exchange and Sharing
The annual event "112th Academic Year National University and College Library Directors Joint Conference" took place from May 9th to 10th at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Library. In 2024, coinciding with the Tainan 400 celebrations, it held significant meaning for the NCKU Library to host this important conference again after more than 20 years. With the theme "Knowledge Illuminates, Knowledge Reimagined: Libraries ∞ Generative," over 120 library directors and representatives from universities and colleges nationwide participated, sharing their operational performance, challenges, innovative services, and exploring new trends, challenges, and solutions in the library field.
The Joint Conference, hosted annually by different university and college libraries, saw NCKU Library hosting it for the first time in over two decades since 2002. The library prides itself on multidisciplinary knowledge leadership and innovation, with recent distinctive developments including thematic concept book exhibitions, immersive games, the "NCKU Book City" mobile library program, recording audio books for the visually impaired, and personalized academic research analytics services for faculty and department units, aspiring to become one of Taiwan's significant academic resource centers.
NCKU Vice President Ching-Chang Lee attended the opening ceremony, welcoming library directors and representatives from universities and colleges nationwide to the event. In his address, Vice President Lee emphasized the importance of libraries as essential knowledge acquisition spaces for university and graduate students. With the rapid development of generative AI, he noted its impact on library operations and development, stating that while generative AI efficiently consolidates old knowledge, the development of knowledge still relies on human intellect. He emphasized the need to face, accept, learn, and use new technologies in response to emerging trends.
Tzu-Fun Fu, the Director of NCKU Library, highlighted the importance of the Joint Conference as a platform for meaningful exchanges, thanking everyone for gathering to share and discuss the challenges and opportunities in university library operations. This year's conference will focus on the impact of generative AI on library operations, with two days of in-depth and comprehensive discussions. Director Fu expressed gratitude for the assistance and participation of various units and members, ensuring the smooth progress of the conference, and looked forward to fruitful and pleasant meeting experiences for all.
As generative AI develops rapidly, how university libraries uphold their mission and integrate new technologies to embrace the era's pulse, illuminating knowledge and reimagining it to demonstrate the infinite possibilities of libraries, is a crucial topic of the "112th Academic Year National University and College Library Directors Joint Conference." Discussions will also cover the positioning and value, management, challenges and responses, alliances and collaborations, creativity and practices of libraries in five major aspects, stimulating mutual brainstorming and exchanging ideas to explore solutions. National Taiwan University Library Director Guang-Hua Chen was invited to deliver a lecture on "Professionalism and Innovation in Academic Libraries."
To further acquaint participants with the beauty of Tainan's culture, NCKU meticulously planned distinctive water and land tours. The water tour included a visit to Anping Harbor, with guided explanations aboard the boat introducing landmarks such as Anping Lighthouse, Fishing Light Island, Eternal Golden Castle, and Lin Mo Niang Park to understand Tainan's history. The land tour involved exploring Anping's streets and alleys, accompanied by professional guides to visit Anping's "Five Halls, Four Streets, and Three Alleys," experiencing the former glory of Anping's historical settlements, and visiting the most rustic and flavorful aspect of Taiwan's common people's lives.
In 1989, the National Chiao Tung University and Tsing Hua University convened a gathering of library directors, initiating the "National University and College Library Directors Joint Conference." Starting from 1992, including technical colleges and normal colleges' libraries gradually joined, transforming it into an annual routine conference. On May 16, 2008, during the 96th Academic Year Library Directors Joint Conference, it was decided to change the conference's name to the "National University and College Library Directors Joint Conference," inviting polytechnic institutions to participate and securing funding as a regular program under the Ministry of Education's reporting conditions.
