The Corporate Volleyball League at NCKU debuts Smart Sports Technology for live broadcasting.
NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen delivered a speech and served as the guest of honor at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Grade A Corporate Volleyball League for men and women, held at the Chung Cheng Hall on February 4th. The event spanned four days and showcased NCKU's innovative Smart Sports Technology, providing a more engaging viewing experience and making its debut on sports broadcasting platforms.
President Shen, an avid sports enthusiast himself, expressed his delight at attending the event and witnessing the interdisciplinary team's achievements in sports technology. He emphasized the university's role and responsibility in using technology to enhance sports excitement, looking forward to further advancements in this area.
The Corporate Volleyball League, one of Taiwan's semi-professional sports leagues, designated NCKU as a regular host since 2020, highlighting the university's significance in promoting volleyball in the Tainan area. NCKU's volleyball team, coached by Professor Hsien Che Huang and Assistant Professor Hong-Chun Huang, has produced talents like Hsi Chen, who represented Taiwan in international competitions.
The "NCKU Project CrowdEyes Smart Sports Technology Team," led by Professor Jenn-Jier Lien from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, collaborated with various departments and institutes to provide advanced broadcasting services. They deployed 20 cameras at the event venue and utilized real-time image processing for multi-angle broadcasting, earning praise from ELEVEN Television for enhancing the viewing experience.
Professor Lien expressed the team's ambition to make such technology accessible on mobile devices, enabling viewers to customize their viewing experience. The team aims to provide highlights, player profiles, and tactical analyses for every viewer in the future.
The "NCKU Project CrowdEyes Smart Sports Technology Team," led by Director Tsang-Hai Huang from the Department of Exercise and Health Sciences, Professor Jenn-Jier Lien from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Director Hsien-Che Huang from the Sports Center, and Teacher Huang Hung-Chun, comprises members from various departments and institutes including the Department of Exercise and Health Sciences, Sports Center, Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Institute of Convergence Intelligent Systems, and Department of Psychology.
During the matches held at the Chung Cheng Hall, the team introduced several innovative sports technologies, marking their first-ever application in volleyball matches and broadcasting in Taiwan. These included player sentiment analysis using network data word clouds, player strength analysis and recommendations for similar players, multi-angle broadcasting of the court, panoramic views of the entire field, trajectory recognition and landing point identification for exciting match highlights, 3D player recognition, and real-time player posture analysis. These technologies provided viewers with a broader understanding of tactics and player capabilities.
