The "Leadership and Action" course of the College of Social Sciences at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has collaborated with several high schools in Tainan City, including Yong-Ren High School for the first time in 2024, and for the third time with Tzu Chi High School. The course, spanning two months, aims to foster cooperation and interaction among the three parties, encouraging students to pursue excellence and achieve mutual success.
On the 8th of May, students and teachers from Yong-Ren High School and Tzu Chi High School participated in the opening ceremony of the "Leadership and Action" course at NCKU's College of Social Sciences. This event provided an opportunity for high school students to interact with senior students from NCKU. Notable faculty members participating in the course include Dean Hsiao Fu-jen, Vice Dean Chung-fan Hu, Professor Chang-Ching Lin, Associate Professors Yan-lian Guo, Wan-Ru Yeh, and Chih-cheng Meng.
Dean Fu-Jen Hsiao mentioned that this collaboration marks the fifth year of the course, emphasizing discussions on social issues by integrating history with daily life. The collaboration with Yong-Ren High School will explore topics such as environment, resources, arts, festivals, drama, and literature through a historical lens. Meanwhile, the collaboration with Tzu Chi High School will focus on self-directed learning, discussing topics like transitional justice, wealth disparity, and changing consumption patterns.
Principal Yue-Qin Yu of Yong-Ren High School, an alumna of NCKU's Department of History, expressed delight in the collaboration, acknowledging the opportunities provided by the College of Social Sciences to enhance students' learning experiences. Principal Zhi-hua Yao of Tzu Chi High School praised the "Leadership and Action" course and encouraged high school students to pursue excellence and diligent learning based on their impressive past collaborations.
NCKU's College of Social Sciences has been implementing interdisciplinary teaching programs in collaboration with high schools as part of the Ministry of Education's talent cultivation project from 2019 to 2023. The "Leadership and Action" course, initiated in the second semester of the academic year 2021-2022, aims to cultivate leadership, teamwork, and communication skills among university students, as well as problem-solving and research abilities among high school students. The course structure includes elective courses, inquiry-based learning, self-directed learning, and in-depth elective courses.
Since its inception, the course has seen an increase in enrollment from 20 to nearly 40 students and has collaborated with Tzu Chi High School, Tainan Second High School, and Southern Taiwan Science Park High School. Throughout the two-month exchange with Yong-Ren High School and Tzu Chi High School, professors teaching the "Leadership and Action" course will provide assistance and guidance to the university students, aiming for fruitful learning outcomes to be presented on May 11th.
