Oxford University Badminton Team Visits NCKU for the First Time, Kicking off Academic and Athletic Exchange
The Oxford University Badminton Club made its first visit to Taiwan from August 27 to September 6, engaging in an 11-day friendly exchange with top Taiwanese universities. Today (28th), the team visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) as their first stop, where both sides exchanged gifts and held a friendly match. The exchange aims to deepen academic and athletic collaboration between the institutions.
Director of NCKU’s Physical Education Office, Hsien Che Huang, warmly welcomed the Oxford University Badminton Club and expressed that this event marks the beginning of a long-term partnership. Huang hopes that through regular exchanges, joint training, and academic cooperation, the interaction between Oxford University and NCKU will be strengthened, creating more opportunities for academic and athletic development, and fostering deeper collaboration between the two universities.
The current captain of Oxford’s badminton team, NCKU alumnus from the Department of Materials Science (Class of 2021) and key organizer of this event, Ping-Yuan Lee, explained that as a former member of NCKU’s badminton team, he chose to make his alma mater the first stop of the tour. He wanted to bring the Oxford team back to the place where he grew and hopes the players will experience the warm atmosphere of NCKU and appreciate the unique charm of Tainan, a city rich in history and culture. Lee mentioned that the team was already aware of NCKU's impressive badminton achievements in Taiwan and eagerly looked forward to this friendly match and cultural exchange, with hopes of establishing a long-term academic and sports collaboration.
Besides badminton techniques, the Oxford team will share their experiences of studying in the UK and participating in European badminton competitions with NCKU’s players. In return, NCKU will introduce Taiwan's badminton training methods under the local sports system, fostering mutual learning and providing valuable insights into the cross-cultural academic and sports environments. NCKU badminton coach, Professor Kuo-Cheng Tu, expressed confidence that this exchange would bring mutually beneficial results, offering both teams unique perspectives and growth opportunities.
The Oxford University Badminton Club recently earned a silver medal in the BUCS Super League (British Universities and Colleges Sport) for the 2023-2024 season and reached the quarterfinals in the national university championships. The team also performed well in national individual tournaments, with three men's doubles teams reaching the top 32, one men's doubles team reaching the top 16, one mixed doubles team advancing to the top 16, and one women’s doubles team making it to the quarterfinals. The visiting delegation consists of 17 members, including Oxford’s top players and former members of the national junior team. In addition to NCKU, they will also visit National Taiwan University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and Taipei University of Business for further friendly exchanges.
