The 113th Annual Conference of the Chinese Society for Metallurgical Engineering was held on October 19 at the Department of Resources Engineering, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). The conference was chaired by Chairman Sea-Fue Wang. This year's conference was organized by the Department of Resources Engineering, NCKU, with Professor Hsing-I Hsiang serving as the organizing committee chair, and Professor Bing-Zhi Xie as the vice-chair. Professor Xin-Fu Ye and Professor Zheng-Han Li acted as the executive secretary and deputy executive secretary, respectively.
The main conference took place in the morning, where the Dean of the College of Engineering, NCKU, Professor Chyan-Deng Jan, and the General Manager of Taiwan Pallet Corporation, Mr. Qiu-Long Chu, gave opening speeches. The prestigious "Technical Medal" was awarded to Guanghe Refractory Industries Co., Ltd. for its innovative technologies, commitment to environmental protection, and contributions to the circular economy, as well as multiple patents in the field of metallurgical engineering.
Additionally, the "Outstanding Service Contribution Award" was presented to Professor Wei-Te Wu and Professor Chi-Ming Lin from the Department of Materials Science at National Chung Hsing University for their dedicated organization of the 112th Annual Conference. Director Ting-Han Lai of the Intellectual Property and Testing Technology Division at China Steel Corporation received the same award for his exceptional contributions during his tenure as Secretary-General of the Society from 2022 to 2023, which included securing a new headquarters, refurbishing the office, and strengthening the Society’s financial health.
The "15th Lu Shantong Scholarship" was awarded to three students, and the Metallurgical Paper Awards were presented to 112 authors, while five students received the Outstanding Student Awards for universities and technical colleges.
In the afternoon, a series of keynote speeches were delivered by Professor Bing-Zhi Xie from NCKU and Professor Xing-Rong He from Tohoku University, Japan. Professor Hsieh spoke on "The Current State and Future Development of Carbon Dioxide Geological Storage," and Professor He discussed "Mineral Carbonation Technology for Alkaline Industrial Wastes," addressing the expectations and practices for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The conference also passed a proposal from the Taiwan SOFC Industry Promotion Committee, urging the government to strengthen policies and funding for the development of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stationary power generation systems to enhance stable electricity supply and contribute to the nation's net-zero emission goals.
The conference concluded with a paper session where 131 papers were presented, attracting around 300 participants, showcasing a rich diversity of research. The event ended with a dinner and a lucky draw, marking a successful and meaningful conclusion to this year’s annual meeting.
