NCKU and the University of Chicago Join Forces to Promote the 2025 Summer Exchange Research Student Program
On December 19, the Office of International Affairs at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) successfully held the "2025 University of Chicago Summer Exchange Research Student Program" information session. The event featured Academician Cheng Chin from Academia Sinica, who is currently a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago and one of the founders of the Summer Exchange Research Student Program. Known for his dedication to promoting international academic collaboration, Academician Chin was invited to share insights about the program. The event, aimed at fostering international academic cooperation and research exchange, consisted of two sessions: a student information-sharing session and a Principal Investigator (PI) networking meeting. A total of 90 faculty and students participated.
Academician Chin Introduces the Program, Students Share Experiences to Guide Future Planning
During the information-sharing session, Dean of International Affairs Sun-Yuan Hsieh of the Office of International Affairs expressed gratitude to Academician Cheng Chin for initiating the program. He encouraged students to seize the opportunity and actively apply, highlighting the achievements of three students who participated in short-term research projects at the University of Chicago this year. He also expressed hopes for deeper academic exchanges between the two institutions in the future.
Academician Chin provided a detailed explanation of the application process, introduced various research fields and PIs at the University of Chicago, and elaborated on related funding opportunities. In addition to program details, the session featured two students—Qi Wang and Li-Yu Tang from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering—who had just completed the program in September. They shared their application process, research projects, and experiences, giving interested students clearer guidance for planning their participation.
Strengthening Collaboration, Creating Research Opportunities, and Offering Diverse Support
For 2025, a total of 41 PIs from NCKU are participating in the program, with 11 attending the networking session with Academician Chin. These included key figures such as Dean Chin-Chun Tsai of the College of Science, Dean Ju-Ming Wang of the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Director Li-Wha Wu of the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Professor Chien-Sheng Chen of the Department of Food Safety / Hygiene and Risk Management, Assistant Professor Ya-Lan Chiu from the Department of Physical Therapy, Professor Sheng-Fu Liang from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Assistant Professor Wen-Hui Cheng and Associate Professor Chun-Yen Liu from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor Yih-Chin Tai from the Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering, Assistant Professor Cheng-Han Lee from the Department of Resources Engineering, and Associate Professor Biqing Liang from the Department of Earth Sciences. International Education Section Chief Shu-Ying Wang also participated.
Section Chief Shu-Ying Wang noted that the University of Chicago is one of NCKU's key partner institutions. This year, the program has been expanded to include the fields of science, engineering, and biomedical sciences to promote further research collaborations and exchanges between faculty and students from both universities. She expressed appreciation for the contributions of Academician Cheng Chin and Dean Chin-Chun Tsai in the early stages of the program. Next year, NCKU plans to subsidize 5 students for short-term research at the University of Chicago, covering full tuition and accommodation fees. Additionally, accommodations for University of Chicago students visiting Taiwan will also be funded.
During the networking session, Academician Chin provided in-depth details about the program and engaged in face-to-face discussions with NCKU PIs. Topics included selecting University of Chicago research students to visit Taiwan, methods of faculty collaboration, and potential joint research areas. The interactive atmosphere was lively, and both sides expressed high hopes for strengthening academic collaboration through the exchange research student program.
This Summer Exchange Research Student Program not only deepens the partnership between NCKU and the University of Chicago, but also demonstrates NCKU’s efforts to advance internationalized education and research. Through the program, students will have the opportunity to broaden their global perspectives, enhance their academic and research capabilities, and pave the way for greater development in their future careers.
