2025 FUN AI WINTER CAMP: Exploring the Future of Artificial Intelligence and Its Infinite Applications
AI technology is a prominent field today, and the 2025 FUN AI WINTER CAMP, held at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), has been attracting increasing numbers of students each year. Compared to its inaugural event four years ago, the number of participants has grown by 1.5 times. Students from top high schools and universities across northern, central, and southern Taiwan actively joined the camp, seizing the opportunity to enhance their AI technology and application skills. The event also inspired participants to explore the limitless possibilities of AI applications.
The 2025 FUN AI WINTER CAMP took place from February 4 to February 7, spanning 4 days. It was co-organized by Professor Wen-Yu Su from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at NCKU, Professors Min-Chun Hu and Hung-Kuo Chu from the Department of Computer Science at National Tsing Hua University, Assistant Professor Yi-Ting Chen from the Department of Computer Science at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and Assistant Professor Tse-Yu Pan from the Industry-Academia Innovation College at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. The camp aimed to nurture promising talent, encourage students to engage in the AI industry, drive technological innovation, and enhance national competitiveness.
The opening ceremony was held on February 4 in Room 65405 on the 4th floor of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at NCKU. Distinguished guests in attendance included Nelson Wen, Chief of the Cultural and Information Section at the American Institute in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Branch, NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology President Chuan-Yu Chang, and NCKU Computer Science and Information Engineering Department Chair Shyh-Hau Wang. They encouraged participants to seize learning opportunities and not to fear challenges.
The FUN AI WINTER CAMP has been held for 4 consecutive years. In its first year (2022), due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the camp was conducted online. However, in subsequent years, it has been hosted in person at the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at NCKU. The department's well-equipped software and facilities have significantly enhanced the learning experience. Each year, the number of participants has grown, with a 1.5-fold increase compared to the first year. This year, a total of 153 students from across Taiwan joined the camp, including those from Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School, National Lan-Yang Girls' Senior High School, National Chiayi Senior High School, and students from NCKU.
The four-day winter camp provided students with hands-on experience in AI technology applications. The carefully designed curriculum included technology sharing sessions, game platform introductions, laboratory visits, competitions, and more. A highlight of the camp was two major hands-on projects:
1. "Squid Game" Implementation – Students learned to write code to control a squid collecting food while gathering coordinate-based data for AI training. Through this exercise, participants gained experience in using data for training, developing AI models, and improving data collection efficiency.
2. "Tank Battle" Implementation – Students formed teams to control tanks and engaged in 3*3 battles while learning about Reinforcement Learning. They wrote AI code, which was then collected and used for head-to-head matches. This allowed them to test their models against each other, fostering teamwork and deepening their understanding of AI-driven strategy.
During the event, participants also visited Professor Wen-Yu Su's "Robot Open Lab" at the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at NCKU. Professor Su introduced the control of automatic monorails and autonomous vehicles, and the students responded enthusiastically to the presentation.
