National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) launched the "International Advancement Program" in 2024 to actively expand international cooperation. On February 14, 2025, an International Cooperation Strategy Sharing Session was held, where 11 project teams and nearly 40 faculty and research staff shared the fruitful outcomes of their research collaborations with top international universities. This session not only provided a platform for experience exchange but also showcased NCKU's active commitment and outstanding achievements in international cooperation.

On the morning of February 14, the sharing session was held on the 4th floor of the Yun-Ping Administration Building. NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen personally attended, along with Vice President for Research & Development Chuan-Pu Liu, Vice President for International Affairs Sun-Yuan Hsieh, and Director of the Office of Strategic Planning Rwei-Ling Yu, as well as other administrative leaders. President Shen opened the session by acknowledging the dedication and efforts of the 11 project teams and reflecting on the progress made in the "International Advancement Program" during his 2 years in office. He noted that the results of the program were clear, with notable achievements in personnel involvement, paper publications, large-scale projects, and awards. He emphasized that the core value of the university is academic excellence, and "internationalization, interdisciplinarity, and innovation" are the 3 key elements that NCKU continues to pursue for academic excellence. The goal of the International Advancement Program is to enhance NCKU’s international influence. Moving forward, in addition to deepening international innovation collaboration, President Shen pointed out that artificial intelligence (AI) is an opportunity for the university to leap ahead. NCKU looks forward to integrating AI in the development of cutting-edge research and education. Furthermore, he highlighted that the founding spirit of NCKU emphasizes the university's social contributions and encouraged all teams to continue seeking breakthroughs and development toward "international collaboration."

The sharing session focused on discussing the strategies and practices of international cooperation developed by various project teams, including substantial research collaborations, joint paper publications, organizing international seminars, mutual visits with internationally renowned scholars, study exchanges, short-term research, and technical complementarities. Many teams emphasized that the foundation of international cooperation lies in core technologies or research, underscoring the importance of leveraging their own strengths to exert international influence.

In addition to observing international cooperation examples from various project teams, NCKU Vice President for Research & Development Chuan-Pu Liu also shared his observations on the process of reporting university rankings. He mentioned that, compared to the full English name "National Cheng Kung University," the abbreviation "NCKU" is more memorable internationally. He suggested that starting now, the university should use "NCKU" more frequently to increase the recognition of NCKU’s academic brand within the international community.

The NCKU "International Advancement Program" aims to elevate NCKU’s key technological areas into Taiwan's areas of strength through close collaboration with 39 world-leading universities, including King's College London in the UK and Georgia Institute of Technology in the US. The program strives to bring research outcomes to the international stage and enhance NCKU's global reputation. Since its implementation, nearly 200 faculty members, researchers, and students have been involved. With the support of this program, research teams are actively engaging in exchange and learning with international partners, working together to address global challenges.

The research teams have achieved remarkable results in international cooperation, covering various fields such as space technology, sustainable environments, infectious disease research, orchid studies, green energy materials, smart manufacturing, and cutting-edge quantum technology. For instance, the "Han-Min Hsia Space Science and Technology Center" team collaborated with Taiwan's TRITON satellite and NASA’s CYGNSS satellite to observe Taiwan’s hydrology and soil moisture, which supported agricultural and disaster prevention applications. They also monitored the impact of solar storms on Earth's ionosphere. The team of Sustainable Environment Research Laboratories organized an international seminar where scholars from several countries exchanged ideas on water quality research, water recycling technologies, and the treatment of emerging pollutants. Meanwhile, the team of Infectious Disease and Signaling Research Center held an international seminar, inviting scholars from the UK, the US, and Japan to engage in discussions, while also visiting Singapore to expand their collaborative efforts. The team of Orchid Research and Development Center presented their findings on orchid yellow leaf disease, the fragrance release mechanism of fragrant Phalaenopsis orchids, and the symbiotic relationship between Phalaenopsis orchids and microorganisms at the World Orchid Conference. The Hi-GEM Green-Energy Materials Research Center partnered with top universities in Germany and the UK to develop high-security gel solid-state electrolytes, high-energy-density batteries, and carbon dioxide conversion technologies. In the realm of smart manufacturing, the Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center collaborated with the Technical University of Munich in Germany to develop generative AI applications for zero-defect manufacturing. Lastly, the Center for Quantum Frontiers of Research & Technology saw their research published in top international journals and successfully attracted international scholars to join their team, further enhancing their global presence.

This sharing session was not only a showcase of the outcomes of NCKU’s "International Advancement Program" but also a significant milestone in the university’s active expansion of international cooperation and enhancement of academic strength. Through collaboration with top universities worldwide, NCKU has achieved remarkable results in various research fields. Moving forward, NCKU will continue to deepen international cooperation, cultivate more talent with a global perspective, and contribute to solving global challenges, all while advancing toward the goal of becoming a world-class university.
