Fulbright Taiwan and International Education Administrators Visit NCKU to Delve into Its Uniqueness

Synergy Correlation

On March 19th, Fulbright Taiwan led international education administrators (IEA) from 16 institutions across the United States to visit NCKU. The delegation included representatives from institutions such as the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Southern California, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, and George Washington University. The delegation gained insights into NCKU, enhanced their understanding of Taiwan's higher education system, and fostered academic exchange and cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S.

In his welcome remarks, Chair Professor Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Vice President for International Affairs, reflected on the collaborations between NCKU and Fulbright Taiwan. He highlighted the Fulbright Master's Scholarship Program launched in 2014. The areas of the scholarship program include Creative Industry Design, Energy Engineering, and History. In 2021, an MoU of the Consortium for Study Abroad in Taiwan (CSAT) was signed between the two institutions. The agreement is the basis of encouraging students from U.S. institutions to study short-term programs at NCKU. From 1998-2025, there are 57 NCKU faculty who are Fulbright scholars.

Before the formal meeting, Dr. Randall Nadeau, Executive Director of the Foundation, led the delegation to walk around the NCKU campus and made a brief introduction to the Fulbright Tree, which was planted in 2022. At the beginning of his remarks, Dr. Nadeau shared his connection to Tainan and NCKU. He lived in Tainan for a short period of time and was a lecturer at NCKU. Besides, he expressed his deep admiration for Tainan’s students based on his past experiences. Furthermore, he emphasized that NCKU has received the highest number of Fulbright scholar grants among universities in Taiwan. Meanwhile, he also encouraged more NCKU students to apply for Fulbright scholarships. Hence, we can further strengthen the foundation for Taiwan-U.S. academic and cultural exchanges.

During the meeting,  Professor Chun Hei Antonio Cheung from College of Medicine and Prof. Fan-Tien Cheng, Chief Executive Officer of Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center (IMRC) presented relevant international academic exchanges as well as overviews of their distinctive research areas. Professor Cheung introduced the summer program offered by the College of Medicine, which aims to attract outstanding medical students from around the world and facilitate deeper academic exchanges between them and the faculty and students of NCKU. Professor Cheng provided an overview of the Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center (IMRC), outlining its technological and design advancements as it advances from Industry 4.0 to Industry 4.2. The goal of the center is to evolve from achieving zero defects of intelligent manufacturing to realizing a process of net-zero carbon emission with green intelligent manufacturing.

The delegation also visited Innovation Headquarters of NCKU, where Director Liang-Ming Whang provided an introduction and guided tour to offer a more comprehensive understanding of NCKU from multiple perspectives. The NCKU representatives who attended the meeting included Vice President for International Affairs, Chair Professor Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Director Liang-Ming Whang of Innovation Headquarters, Prof. Fan-Tien Cheng, Chief Executive Officer of Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center, and Professor Chun Hei Antonio Cheung from College of Medicine.
