Universitas Diponegoro and NCKU Expand Talent Cultivation Initiatives

Synergy Correlation

On May 14, 2025, Prof. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., the Rector of Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), led a delegation to National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) upon the invitation of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. Building on the strong foundation of existing student exchange programs and dual degree agreements in engineering sciences, both universities aim to expand their talent development initiatives. These initiatives are expected to align with corporate demands and explore opportunities across the fields of engineering and biological sciences.

NCKU’s Executive Vice President Shyy-Woei Chang extended a warm welcome to the delegation and provided an overview of the ongoing exchanges between the two institutions. The Colleges of Engineering and Liberal Arts at both universities have signed Memoranda of Understanding to promote academic collaboration. In addition, the Department of Geomatics has established a student exchange agreement. Most notably, the Department of Civil Engineering has initiated a Cooperative Education Program Agreement, which currently enables three students from UNDIP to pursue their master’s degrees here at NCKU. Most graduate students from UNDIP studied in NCKU’s Civil Engineering and Geomatics, with others in International Management, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Biotechnology. From 2019 to 2024, the two universities have co-authored 38 papers. Executive Vice President Chang expressed optimism about incorporating both universities’ talent development models into corporate training needs, highlighting NCKU's close cooperation with enterprises.

Chair Prof. Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Vice President for International Affairs of NCKU, emphasized the invitation for UNDIP to send outstanding lecturers for PhD studies and students for master’s programs, especially through laboratory research collaborations to enhance academic capabilities.

Rector Suharnomo praised NCKU’s excellent academic performance and expressed hopes for expanding collaborative projects beyond existing engineering partnerships. According to a report released by Stanford University in 2024, 163 NCKU faculty members have been named in the world’s top 2% of Scientists List, and he stressed the importance of increasing support for faculty exchanges. Furthermore, with strong business and trade ties between Taiwan and Indonesia, the talent development collaboration between the two universities is expected to provide positive support for local businesses.

Vice Rector Wijayanto added that both universities are committed to contributing to their local communities. Currently, UNDIP is collaborating with various Indonesian cities on a project to convert seawater into drinkable water, which is anticipated to improve water resource management.

The delegation from UNDIP included Rector Suharnomo, Vice Rector Wijayanto for Research, Innovation, Collaborations and Public Communication, Ms. Dewi Widayani, Director Dian Wahyu Harjanti for Innovation, Hilirisation and Collaboration, and Prof. Didik Wisnu Widjajanto of the Steering Committee of International Office at Faculty of Animal and Agricultural Science.

The representatives from NCKU included Executive Vice President Shyy-Woei Chang, Vice President Sun-Yuan Hsieh for International Affairs, Dean Chyan-Deng Jan of the College of Engineering, Associate Dean I-Ching Chen of the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Chief Yen-Chen Liu of Industry Liaison Office, Innovation Headquarters, Deputy Director Ya-Tsui Ellen Hsueh of the International Relations Division, Deputy Director Melody Tseng of the Overseas Recruitment and Admission Division, Manager Nina Fu, and Manager Kevin Chiu of the International Relations Division.

Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), located in Central Java, Indonesia, was founded in 1956 as a private higher education institution and achieved national university status in 1961. From 2021 to 2024, its academic output was primarily in four areas: environmental science (31.3%), earth and planetary sciences (20.3%), agricultural and biological sciences (15.4%), and engineering (15.3%).
