NCKU Department of Computer Science Visits Vietnam, Showcasing the University’s Long-Term Strategy in AI, Academic Collaboration
The visit began on June 17 with the international workshop titled “AI in Academia and Beyond: Insights, Opportunities & Scholarship Pathways,” co-hosted by of NCKU Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT), and the NCKU Overseas Hub in Vietnam. The event was held in a hybrid format, combining in-person and virtual participation.
The workshop was moderated by Dr. Ngo Thi Minh Hien, Director of the NCKU Overseas Hub in Vietnam. Faculty members include Professors Shyh-Hau Wang, Chung-Ping Young, Wei-Ta Chu, and Ing-Chao Lin from NCKU, as well as Dr. Le Trong Nhan, Dr. Nguyen Duc Dung, and Associate Professor Pham Hoang Anh from HCMUT, delivered keynote presentations. Topics ranged from hardware acceleration for deep learning, human-computer interaction, AI applications in medical diagnostics, AI ethics in education, to open AIoT platforms, sparking academic inspiration and collaborative ideas among attendees. Professor Wang also took this opportunity to introduce NCKU and its Department of Computer Science to local faculty and students, offering deeper insight into the university’s academic strengths.
Following the workshop, the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering delegation conducted admissions and scholarship interviews for Vietnamese students, expressing hope to welcome outstanding students to NCKU in the near future. The delegation also met with three academic leaders from the HCMUT Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering—Dean Associate Professor Dr. Quan Thanh Tho, Vice Dean Associate Professor Dr. Tran Ngoc Thinh, and Vice Dean Associate Professor Dr. Pham Hoang Anh—to discuss collaborative opportunities and visit the university’s Advanced Computing Lab.
On the second day, the delegation visited the International University under Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), as well as the Vietnam campus of RMIT University.
At International University, the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering team engaged in in-depth discussions with representatives from engineering and IT-related faculties, including Ms. Dinh Kim Phung (Deputy Director of External and Public Relations), Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Sinh (Dean of the School of Computer Science and Engineering), Dr. Le Thi Ngoc Hanh (Lecturer), and Associate Professor Pham Thi Thu Hien (Head of Medical Devices, School of Biomedical Engineering). The discussion focused on potential areas of collaboration such as co-supervision of graduate students, faculty exchange, dual degree mechanisms, and joint workshops. The NCKU delegation also visited the university’s Medical Photonics Lab.
A special session was also held with NCKU alumni currently working in Vietnamese academia. Seeing alumni thrive in international academic environments demonstrated NCKU’s long-term impact in cultivating global talent, bringing great pride to the delegation.
At RMIT Vietnam, the delegation met with representatives from the School of Science, Engineering and Technology, including Acting Deputy Dean TS. Nguyen Le Huy, Senior Lecturer TS. Ling-Hou Chong, Program Manager TS. Quang Tran, and Ms. Hoa Do (Manager). The meeting resulted in preliminary consensus on potential joint initiatives, with both parties expressing interest in forming transnational research teams for further academic exchange.
On June 19, the delegation visited the NCKU Overseas Hub in Vietnam, located at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City. The hub has long served as a vital base for NCKU’s New Southbound Strategy in Vietnam. The delegation expressed sincere gratitude to Dr. Ngo Thi Minh Hien, who provided full support in event planning, institutional coordination, and workshop co-organization, demonstrating the hub’s crucial role in advancing international academic diplomacy.
Through this visit, the NCKU Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering delegation engaged in in-depth discussions with multiple partner institutions regarding future collaboration strategies. Both sides reached a number of consensus on promoting scholarship opportunities, enhancing dual degree partnerships, organizing AI-themed workshops, and establishing mechanisms for research collaboration—laying a solid foundation for future cooperative endeavors.
