【94th Anniversary】NCKU Science Boulevard Science Expo Kicks Off, with Kids and Adults Becoming “Science Scholars”
The 9th edition of the NCKU Science Boulevard Science Expo (第九屆成大理學大道科學博覽會) was co-planned by the Center for Science Education (科學教育中心) and the five departments of the College of Science—Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and Photonics. Core facilities of NCKU, including the Core Facility Center (核心設施中心) and the Biomedical Optical Imaging Core Facility (生醫光學影像核心平台), also participated. At the opening ceremony, attending guests were presented with the event mascot “Science Duck (科學鴨)”, intended to attract more visitors to experience the fun of science. Many children eagerly moved between the activity stations, ready to embark on a science adventure blending knowledge and exploration.
NCKU College of Science Dean Jin-Jun Tsai (蔡錦俊) stated that the science expo has been held for nine years, growing increasingly lively each year. Seeing many children participate this year, he reminded everyone to enjoy the activities safely while fully experiencing a day of science fun. This year’s theme, “Science Scholars on a Mission,” integrates a science marketplace and science classrooms, where participants must complete multiple scientific challenges to collect “resources” in exchange for “weapons” and “armor,” ultimately uniting to face the symbolic unknown, the Bear Demon King (諾Bear). Each station incorporates principles from physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and earth science, allowing learning to occur naturally through gameplay, embodying the educational philosophy of “learning through play, doing through learning.”
Director of the Center for Science Education, Hsu-Cheng Hsu (徐旭政), said that in celebration of NCKU’s 94th anniversary, the College of Science continues the tradition of hosting the Science Boulevard Science Expo. This ninth edition, held under cool weather, attracted many participants of all ages. The expo has drawn thousands since its inception, and the mascot Science Duck changes color based on UV intensity—from white to red—combining fun with scientific principles, helping attendees experience how science comes from daily life. This year, the event brought together students from high school, university, junior high, and elementary school, aiming to serve as a science education platform for parent-child participation, encouraging families to enjoy science together.
Director Hsu-Cheng Hsu also encouraged the children present to consider applying to NCKU in the future. The event featured 28 stations covering physics, chemistry, mathematics, earth sciences, life sciences, and space, combining educational content with interactive fun. Through hands-on activities across multiple departments, participants can learn scientific principles and explore potential future interests. The gamified learning and practical experiences aim to make science more tangible and enjoyable, transforming abstract textbook knowledge into interactive, real-life experiences.
“Science comes from life, and we hope children will fall in love with learning!” said Ms. Wu from Tainan, who attended with her two children studying at Wunyuan Elementary School (文元國小). She explained that this was their second time participating. Her son, a fourth-grader, loves building robots at home and found last year’s event very enjoyable, learning about science through older students’ teaching. This year, she brought her second-grade daughter to learn more scientific knowledge and understand the principles behind each mini-game, expressing hope that NCKU will continue to host the event annually. “We will definitely participate every year!” she said.
The Center for Science Education stated that the 2025 NCKU Science Boulevard Science Expo centered around a Science Marketplace, gathering creative demonstrations from faculty and students of the College of Science’s five departments. Several high schools in Tainan were invited to participate, showcasing cross-generational scientific vitality and innovation. High school and university students collaborated to design challenge missions and provide on-site explanations, transforming abstract scientific knowledge into approachable, hands-on interactive experiences. The event demonstrates a knowledge transmission chain from high school to university to research levels, jointly advancing educational equity and university social responsibility (USR).
